A Day on the Swanny (!)

Post by MTA » Sun Aug 24, 2008 6:15 pm

On Friday, I paid a visit to the Swanage Railway.

If you haven't been, you MUST go as it is set in one of the most beautiful places in England. I swear they wanted to call it the Isle of Perfect rather than Purbeck...

Some great photos Si. Thanks for posting the link.

As Andy says that narrow gauge railway is very interesting.

I visited the Swanage Railway in style when I lived in Surrey. Travelled 1st Class Dining out of Waterloo being pulled by 35028 'Clan Line' & 34027 'Taw Valley'. On arrival at Poole we were bussed to the Swanage to have a return trip hauled by 34072 '247 Squadron'. That was a great day out being hauled by 3 fine Southern Railways steam locos.

Thanks Si, looking at the photo's brought back many happy memories, as I have spent my summer holidays at Swanage for many years. Unfortunately I haven't been there in the past 6 years.

I am a bit puzzled by the shots taken at Norden, as the Wareham end of the line seems to have altered since I was there last, and also the level crossing barriers seem to have been replaced by crossing gates.

John, presumably those changes occurred after Jan 2002 when the Swanage Railway was finally reconnected to the national rail network again.

You can just see the Network Rail 'Stop' sign just in front of the bridge.

Although some 6 years later they have yet to get a train carrying public passengers over this connection (the Virgin special in 2002 was only carrying invited guests I believe).

I travelled on the first public passenger train from the Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway onto the national rail network on last Sunday and returned as well. Departed at 07:00 and arrived at 22:00 - a very long day!
