IP Budget chassis + RC?

Hey,
I'm expecting an IP budget chassis from the postman sometime soon and I was wondering if anyone has any tips on what not to do with it?
I intend to use an RC chip and controller from one of these..

Its 27Mhz which I've heard bad things about but as it probably won't be venturing out to many places I can't see it being too problematic?
This is the body that will hide all this electrical magic stuff...
Any thoughts on this chaps?

Personally, I'd stay away from 27 meg. I found an R/C car at Maplins for less than £8 and that's 40 meg. Ultimately I'd go for Timpdon I think.

I do have a chip for 40Mhz and a controller but they aren't from the same car... Would they still work?

You might have to buy or otherwise acquire a matching pair of frequency crystals - the transmitter and receiver need to be on the same frequency for the set to work!

It's actually not difficult at all - the crystals simply plug into the TX and RX, but without two the same it won't work!

I've just fixed the RC car that I was going to possibly pinch the controller for... So now I don't have a 40Mhz controller... But I do have a 40Mhz chip and a complete 27Mhz chip and controller... If I find the controller for the 40Mhz one then I'll use that but its unlikely as I think it went in the bin...

The circuitry on a 40MHz RX/TX set will not work on a 27MHz set by just swapping crystals. There will be most likely be other parts in the RF circuit that needs to be replaced.
The range of these small cars is very limited.
Much better to pick up a cheap 2.4GHz set on Ebay. A car TX and RX can be had for £30 or less. A low cost micro servos and a couple of microswitches is all you need for simple fwd/rev control.

I'm not too fussed about the Range as I'll probably only use it for shunting and even if it does go for a wander along the main line then I'd probably walk not far behind it... Don't fancy leaving it to hit someone else's stock.
