Roof colour

This is going to sound wierd but what colour is the roof on most NG good stock? Where they white or black (presumably pitch to make 'em water proof).

GVT coaches had white roofs and the goods stock was greyish; WLLR was white roofs according to the accy models.

Any thoughts??

I use a Precision Paints colour called............................. (wait for it) ............................... P65 L.N.E.R. Coach Roof Grey! It's a sort of off-black which does the job for me!

Hi,

The 'white' was likely to be white lead that was 'slaked' (that is a heavy coat of it) onto the roof then the canvas laid into the thick layer of paint and at least another layer put on when dry for more protection.

Goods stock was a cheaper version - let down with black.

Both depending on the coal of the steam locos in use went darker with age so you can have a whole set of greys from white to black.

The white lead also aged and turned black with sunlight and pollution I think, then as the sunlight faded (in winter) went lighter again so that can add even more tints to the range available!

The same variations would of course apply to the grey of the body sides, being white and black mixed together. Don't forget that all colours were invariably hand mixed till the pre-mixed, and ready to use paints were available.

All shades of grey but to be realistic try 800 grade wet and dry with a matt varnish finish attached with waterproof pva. This simulates roof felting well.

I've just stretched some very fine linen over my rooves. Applied with watered-down PVA Mix. Going to paint it black and then dry-brush dark grey. Pics to follow
