Track Advise

Post by Rob » Sun Jul 27, 2008 9:27 pm

This is probablya common question, but i need some advise about what track to use. Its going to be a permenant layout out in the garden. The track in total will be about 75ft. This is without any points, sidings or passing loops. From what i have read, mamod track seems a deffinate no-go. LGB, Peco or Accucraft track seems the best, but im on a bit of a price limit. Please could people with garden railways shine some light on the subject? The track in sillybilly's profile pic looks good stuff, what is it? Cheers :)

You have really got 2 choices, Tenmille or Peco. Tenmille has the option of being suppleid with wood sleepers through Brandbright or plastic sleeper. Peco is the easisest to get hold of, and i'd say is the most common, and the points are better. If you want to go totally different Brandbright also do flat bottom rail with wood sleepers as opposed to bullhead rail, with points to match. SillyBilly I belive has the Tenmille bullhead rail with Brandbright wood sleepers.
"What the hell is that?"
"It's a model icebreaker sir."
"It's a bit big isn't it?"
"It's a full scale model sir....."

I'd go for Peco, a yard of the stuff is £6.50 ecl. postage from Garden Railway Centre. I'm only using the stuff in my DP because a friend is supplying it in exchange of a battery loco!

Yeah, Peco is a great for all layout's I'd say. Flexi track is good, so you can do any radius you want etc... I use it, and its great.

I'd purchase from here, very good prices, unless you are planning to pick up the track.

I have a box of peco SL-700FB which I havent laid yet waiting to buy more to replace the mamod track

choices in 32 guage here in Aus is poor as its hard to find as every one uses 45 guage track :? and importing it costs a fortune in postage

im almost ready to lay my track and im i need of some advise.

looking at some other railways which are on boards, they have roofing felt over the wood which the track lays on. is this to stop the water getting to the wood? is it worth doing on mine?

also a question about peco points. does anyone have peco points and a mamod loco? does the mamod run throught the points ok?

ta

I would recomend the roofing felt if you can, it'll extend the life much further.

I've run my mamod through PECO points, ran fine, if yours isn't thenI'd recomend checking the back-to-backs, should be 28.5mm.

yes I'd suggest putting roof felt ontop of the sleepers as well, as it gives a more natural look for the trackbed than oversized wood!

thanks alot, ill see what we have.

im not bothered about the sleepers, got them free anyway, and i want the wood exposed because i think it looks nice.

as for the mamod, its just that someone said they may not go through peco points, something to do with the inside bits of track which keep it from fallin off around the frog. i hope to have 2 mamods in a couple of weeks, but the points will come much later when the extension is put in for the quarry.

I use peco sm32 flexitrack. Looks great and works great. Used the points with a Lady Anne, an IP Jane, modified MSS, Mamod and a Roundhouse Millie. No problems with any of them, only issue is an IP Box van that has about 6mm of side float on the rear wheelset. It just clicks everytime it goes through the points, but thats because I'm too lazy to refit the solebars and fettle the axle boxes! :D

Only slight problem with Peco track, it is almost finescale in size and if you loose ballast it sometimes you'll need a few laps to clear the grit off the top of the rail, thats if it's been raining as it splashes around. If you fix the balast down then no probs!

ah cheers alan. im planning on just loosely putting the balast in.

might make a wagon which acts as a sort of track cleaner to get rig of the grit.
