Has anyone tried turning the reverser control the other way up, shortening the lever (so it doesn't foul the track!) and running a linkage back to the cab under the footplate? Was just thinking it might be worth a try and wondered if it's been done...........

When I get the chance I'm going to do something simular, so the loco has an in cab reverser, but leave the lever as it is as have a bell crank on the running plate linking them

I've seen that done before, and I've gotta say that the "under the footplate" solution sounds neater!

It does sound better, but after all sorts of faffs I've had with Britomart's steam pipe, I prefer having things that are easily accessible, so I don't have to take the whole bloody thing apart for it not to work properly again 'cause I needed to screw a lose screw back in etc

Isn't there a picture on the mamod forum NM of an in cab reverser some like that? or was that on here? can't remember now

Yes it is on the mamod forum, the loco "DIANA" which had been modded to a saddle tank, it's on page 3 of "Running MSS loco with spirit burner", near half way down the main locomotives & railways page

Well i have no idea who did this conversion, but it works extremley well. I can supply more pictures if needed, these are some that were taken a while back. Essentually, the reverser has no lever at all, its been drilled and threaded rod (long bolt) has been used to adapt it to take the ball in the picture. The rod that runs down the loco has a C cup on it and it all works very well indeed, and can not be seen topside.

Please ask for more pictures if you would like them, however, I will not be able to do any till next Monday at the earliest. Its a cracking little mod though.

I've certainly flipped it over the other way up before with no ill effect.

Had an idea at work today and have just done a mock up version to see if the concept works. The idea is to use a length of brass tube which runs along the top of the frame with a length of piano wire inside. I annealed a piece of brass tube then shaped it and drilled a small hole in the frame and reversing lever

This looked like it might just work so I clamped the tube to the frame and..............

It works like a bike brake cable - I used to use this system for point control on small scale model railways, hopefully I'll do a bit more work on it today.............

Very clever! I've tightened my reverser up so much to stop steam leaks that I doubt I'd get the piano wire to "push" it over!

I'm in the process of building MK 2 and realised that having never run a Mamod I don't actually know which way the reverser works so could one of you lovely people tell me which way the loco should go when I push the lever over to the left (looking from the front).

Thanks Dan - matters to me as I want to rig the cab lever so that when I push the lever forward it goes forward etc. could be a little confusing otherwise

Having seen your brilliant idea, I have just done the same to my loco, but I have a small problem... How does one attach the copper pipe to the front end of the loco?
I was thinking a few drops of glue from a hot glue gun but would this not melt the paint or actually melt from the heat?

it would most likely melt from the heat, as the front on the loco becomes rather hot!

I would bend up a bracket and screw to the front casting.
