This steam up took place on 23/7/2011 & was held as a tribute to the late Jack Wheldon.
Nearly fourty years have now passed since his seminal article “Raising the Pressure” was published in “Railway Modeller” & which set so many of us off on our journey into the garden.
Many of the loco’s Jack built over the years are represented in the video. These include examples of his single oscillating cylinder “Hecla” class tram engines. The Charles Pooter locomotives with both slip eccentric & Wheldon valve gear varieties are also to be seen.
Princess Hester started life as an Archangel F.R. “Princess” which Jack converted into a two cylinder 2-6-0 complete with his own valve gear. “Princess of Wales” also started life as an Archangel Princess & Jack converted this in a similar manner (Two cylinders) but retained slip eccentric gear & it only gained an extra set of driving wheels! “Jocelyn” one of two American type loco’s also put in an appearance.
Archangel locomotives where also run & these included the very first “Brick” locomotive built by Stewart Browne. The first Archangel Double Fairlie “Little Wonder” also had an outing. Others included a pair of Snowdon Rangers & a converted “Satan” class locomotive which represented one of the original Ravenglass & Eskdale locomotives.
Harvey Watkins ran the very first locomotive that he ever built. “Sir Jasper” is a good representation of one of the Glyn Valley Tramway locomotives.
The end of the movie includes a still photograph from the day showing, amongst others, some of the “Founding Fathers” of the Association of 16mm Narrow Gauge Modellers.
