I saw on YouTube a while back a video of someone who went for the simplest way possible of remote controling a mamod, one servo, on the front, next to the smoke box, bar between the servo and the reversing arm, and with all the lovely weather we've not been having (Until Today) I decided to copy the idea, and after an hour in the baking heat inside a polytunnel today, thought I'd post a few pic's, a little bit ugly to look at, but effective!


Attempt 1, Superglue, with tempary masking tape! - Failed!



Attempt 2.5 - A metal Bracket, after breaking the original one, I adapted it to rivit under the servo and to the side of the smokebox, and it worked!

Nice idea! your idea is sound but it doesn't look very realistic!
But the novelty and fun value is 10/10 as well as it being practical in the way that it is easy to fit
So a thumbs up from me
Although it will be interesting to see what you could do to make it look more realistic rather than a huge cube shaped box stuck to the side of the smoke box

Got a trick up my sleve, not sure if I'll ever do it mind! Makes her a lot more controlable!

Do a deal with your model shop as your a volunteer at the SDR
That's what I did at my local steam railway (B&W R) the shop manager did a deal to sell me it at £76 a box which is trade price!
I got 2 boxes of 12 for £150 as he let me off the £2 haha

My Mamod is radio controlled, the servo is in the cab held by a bracket, then a rod run through down the sideof the frames to a lever at the front.

Hmm. All this talk of R/C Mamods makes me wonder....it's easy to RC the reverser block but has anyone taken on R/Cing a regulator to an upgraded Mamod / Jane type?

Funny you mentioned that! I did try it, but without it all connected, not 100% sure it'd work, so just the reg full open!

very difficult to do, the thread is so fine it takes a few turns to make it do anything, more travel required than a servo can provide.

I have only just got into garden railways having bought 2 mamods. My first thought was could they be converted to RC. I am no expert on trains but I do know RC. All of the examples I have seen use large size standard servos etc. Is there any reason why smaller stuff is not used which would be much easier to conceal. You can buy servos these days fo only a few pounds that are only 8mm thick.

I think they have used what they have but providing the servo is powerful enough to move the regulator then the smaller the better.

Only got the Big servo's as its something I've never done before (Except once with a Boat). when I gets some monies I'll probably go for a small servo in the cab (Like above)

I have used these in the past on aeroplanes very powerful, small and above all cheap. Excellent supplier to!
