Oh it's female then. How can you tell (apart from the 20 odd babies we had last year!)? there are definitely 2 one we call Stig of the Dump that lives permanently in the compost bin (actually curled up in the lid) and the other, Hissing Sid (this one) spends a lot of it's time either on top of the ponds filter boxes, in the tunnel or in one of the ponds. But, you are right we have not had any problems with rats, or moles or anything else..... yet.
