RH&DR Visit - 19th April

Post by MTA » Sun Apr 20, 2008 7:13 pm

I visited the RH&DR yesterday. Well, not that I had time to properly visit seeing as I was up the front with the driver having a full line, return trip in No. 8 'Hurricane'

The day weather wise wasn't very good. Overcast skies with the odd rain shower created an opportunity to test the drivers' skills, seeing as the steam engines do not have sanders. Some slipping was experienced with Hurricane, although Steven Poulten (Hurricane's driver) soon brought her back to proper running.

The other engines running were No. 2 Northern Chief, No. 3 Southern Maid and No. 14 Captain Howey.

I found all the staff to be very friendly especially the New Romeny signalman, Mark Lane, whom found me a waterproof jacket to wear as I had not come properly prepared. Also Steven, we had a great chat as we raced along at just over 20 mph about all things steam and other topics. My special thanks go to Tim Gray, who organised the cab ride for me.

All my pictures are on my fotopic site and I am about to upload a video onto YouTube. It is roughly seven minutes long, with just one clip of Southern Maid departing New Romney for Hythe, with all the other clips being taken from Hurricane's cab.

That is why visits by Romney engines to Ravenglass can be erm interesting
Don't think ones got stuck on a bank yet though
looks like a good day though, makes me a bit envious
"What the hell is that?"
"It's a model icebreaker sir."
"It's a bit big isn't it?"
"It's a full scale model sir....."
