Post by hussra » Tue Jul 20, 2010 8:37 am

I see Roundhouse have put a survey on their home page asking for suggestions for their next loco.

I think it would be brilliant if they did something like a Double Fairlie, but thats probably just pushing it!

(Or even better, a Lilla!)

I have been told by Roundhouse themselves that a double Fairlie will never be produced due to the cost of the finished loco, so dont waste your sugestion ;)

Yeah I'd like that, but maybe slightly on the small side. Look at how tom rolt has turned out on 45mm gauge!

they're bringing it out again, identical mechanically to cackler, £890. Not too bad I don't think, 12 month waiting time which is considerably less than some other builders.

I'd quite like to see a K1, although it probably has the same problems as the double fairlie, being too expensive. The three I chose were NWNGR beddgelert, moel tryfan/snowdon ranger and FR mountaineer (current loco). Maybe a bit optimistic because they have already had a few FR locos but worth a try. Although of not much interest to me I think roundhouse would do well to bring out a 7/8ths loco, seeing at how popular it is getting now without many ready to run steam locos.

A batch is also being produced by Roy Wood (lodgecot@btopenworld.com) for delivery early next year.

Some interesting suggestions for the survey, and I wonder if/how RH deal with the "it must be regaugeable" problem. An England engine in 45mm form cannot look anything other than fat.

I suggested an England locomotive, based on the 'basic' chassis as it would offer a fairly cheap, prototype locomotive. And I also suggested Beddgelert as a few of you said. :P

Oh right, may enquire then! :D Thanks!

A way which they could get round the England being fat is having a 32mm version and a 45mm, but i can't see them doing that!

and i always thought a Lady Anne was based on Gelert??!! :?

No, Lady Anne is completely freelance. Remember, the original Lady Annes (back in 1982!) looked like this:

The poll's a good idea but I fear it will be vulnerable to timewasters - i.e., people will suggest models that they wouldn't actually buy because they can't afford them. For that reason (i.e. I can't see myself having enough money for another steamer any time soon!), I don't think I'll submit a suggestion - though I do think a Feldbahn 0-8-0T would be an interesting model, especially since they are "particularly interested" in European and American feedback. Another obvious gap in the live steam market are the Irish 3' gauge prototypes. I fear the larger CDRJC/Lough Swilly prototypes would be too big, but something like a Cork, Blackrock and Passage 2-4-2T or a Clogher Valley tram would be nice....

Problem is now in the market, most of the brit locos have been done, unless you want to start to go into the more smaller, and obscure side of locos that worked in quarrys, works, factories, etc. If you ever take the time to look through the IRS, Industrial Railway Society, industrial narrow gauge album, any NG book really , the amount of lesser known, weird little locos. I love those kind of locos, but i dont suspect many other people do.

I wouldnt mind seeing BLI BLI, the suger cane loco, i'v lways found that quite an attractive little loco, would be great coal fired.

Sklr monarch :D that would be somthing.

another tram engine would be nice also.

I know someone who wouldnt be at all happy if they did Beddgelert or especially Mountaineer! he scratch build the 2009 moty winning mountaineer, and people keep saying, oh is that a roundhouse.
He also made a Beddgelert, but as its such a long rigid framed loco, 16mm curves are a bit tight for it.
