Ffestiniog Railway Youth Training Programme

Post by SillyBilly » Mon Feb 11, 2008 9:56 pm

Hello,
Today, and for the next couple of days I've been taking part in a scheme on the Ffestiniog Railway to train up the younger generation, this has been rather tricky for the organisers finding a way to get through the current crazy legislation which is in our beautifel country. Anyway, today I made a start on helping make a spark arrestor for the hunslet 'Lilla's' ashpan, this included cutting pieces of angle with a 45 degree angle on by hand, a real dear of a job because my aim with just about anything is hopless!

Yours truly actually working (lay off the haircut gags, I know)

A nice panoramic view showing a disc signal and the old loco shed with a famous mountain sat on top of it!

More photos of locos, ect.. tomorrow(ish).

Finished my stint today! It was very pleasing to come back in to the erecting shop after lunch to find the boiler in the frames, albeit (is that the word?) it was supported by a crane but it was major step forward for the project.

Did similar jobs to before, today, to practice the skills we've learnt.

Merddin Emrys is currently having trouble steaming and has been for atleast the past year, so it came on shed early which gave me the oppurtunity to attempt some photography.

Nice photos William.

It is good to see a preserved railway trying to keep engineering skills alive for future generations.

Oh dear, is Merddin still not steaming despite the new slide valves?
(someone told me also that it wasn't a good steamer when it came back in 2005 on oil)
