Big gun model battleships.
Big gun model battleships.
About a year ago, I discovered that in North America and Austraila there is a very popular hobby called big gu model battleships. Basicly, they build RC model warships, fit them with air powered BB guns, put them on a pond, and then sink each other !

Enjoy!

Apparently, they are very easy to fix, and all the electronics are sealed in water tight compartments, so they can be quickly put back into action. They have battles in rounds. After each round, there is a breack during which ships that have been sunk can be salvaged and repaired for the next round.

Actually, I do remember watching a "naval warfare" display on the lake at Peasholm many years ago, but that was with model boats.SillyBilly wrote:Cool, have you seen the battles they have at Peasholm Park in Scarborough, with the 30ft long boats with blokes in them?
Still, shooting and sinking model boats sounds like good fun actually!
Yeah, it does . The guns use low pressure CO2 gas for firing. However, even at low pressure, they are still dangerous. In america, an Itailan battleship, took several hits on it's aft turrets, causing the gas cans in the hull to explode, blowing out the ships sides, and sent the ship to the bottom! Now that sounds fun !

Have I? lol! Being from Scarborough (until a few years ago) I have seen naval warfare in Peasholm Park many times! In fact, a good friend of mine has driven some of the boats from time to time. The larger vessels are driven from inside!SillyBilly wrote:Cool, have you seen the battles they have at Peasholm Park in Scarborough, with the 30ft long boats with blokes in them? Ruddy fantastic, there is a video of YouTube, but it doesn't convey the excitment and coolness of being there.

I wonder how many model 'Waverly's' there are at your local club Chris!?CCairns wrote:Our local Model Boat club usually starts the season with a mock battle on the water, with destroyers, commando boats, a submarine and an exploding island plus some other pyrotechnics. All great fun for the public and it is free to watch as well.

That's at another local Model Boat club (there are a few around the Glasgow area), that specialises in Paddle Steamers and West Coast Steamers, although I've not seen them in action for some years now.
Still we have the real thing which is based here in Glasgow, and I try to get a cruise on her at least once a year. My favourite cruises are when it goes up the West Coast of Scotland at the beginning of the season in early May, but it always gets caught out by the weather, and this year it is only doing 4 days before going to the Dry Dock for its annual hull inspection (normally it is up to 12 days).
