Some pics of modifying Caradoc

Post by laalratty » Wed Jan 30, 2008 9:30 pm

Whilst SillyBilly has been modifying his edrig, i've been busy with my Caradoc. The changes made are very similar, probebly because we worked from the same book. Here is a photo of the dome whilst it was being sprayed green

Image

The boiler has been sprayed matt black at the firebox end and the boiler bands have had a single line of red trimline added. The bufferbeams have also had their backs sprayed black and have had vacum pipes added

Image

Still to come is full body lining, painting the inside of the cab cream, painting the smokebox matt black etc etc

Nice. How easy is it to take the engine apart?

Quite easy actually, if you get the book Tag Gortons live steam workshop, it gives great instructions for taking apart an Edrig, but even without the book its fairley easy to figure out. The taking apart only rquires the hex head nut twirler that comes with the loco, a cross head screwdriver and some small headed spanners (sorry I don't know the sizes, I just "borrow" them from my dad and hope they fit!)

That looks great laalratty!!! I have that book, I will be doing a load of mods to my new Edrig (ie fit Ben-Ben name plates this weekend probs) and other cosmetic improvements...

Matt, its well easy to do, you even get a hex spanner in the Edrig kit! Just as easy as doing a 'clip together kit' nearly!

I like how cleanly this loco comes apart.

The red boiler bands are a nice touch.

The boiler bands have been painted green then had a red line put on them, so nice 2 colour effect
ACLR, SilliyBilly is right, you never see gloss paint on the firebox end of an engine, and very rarely on the smokebox, if your very insistent then semigloss paint is somewhere in between!

Just an update to say that the boiler is back on the chassis now, leaving to be done the painting of the smokebox, painting the inside of the cab and lining, plus anything else I can think of

Well I had a scare with by doc today 60psi blowing off, reg wide open and very little effort coming from the engine. At first I thought it was a steam line blockege but the port cylinder had a mounting screw missing, so it was at an angle which meant the piston was chafing the cylinder. Got it sorted now mind.

My best scare was when Caradocs safety valve got past 80 psi without any sign of it blowing off......
Then gas burner went out, but needle stayed beyond 80psi, all very odd :?

Well they are pressure tested to 120psi And they blow up at about 300 psi.
