Iv been thinking, how many times I would have to run 1 of my steamers round a loop of R1 LGB to simulate a mile of operational running.
anyone here got a full loop of R1 to calculate with?

5280 / 12.56600 = 420.181442

And the wheels on one side of the loco will be a lot smaller than the other side

Not sure if this will help Paul, but with a few rough calculations done with my locos i worked out that in half an hour they will go about half a mile. This does of corse depend on speed and run time but i doubt it wil be far off and it was only rough

They're talking about a 12 inches to the foot scale mile here mate. 1 lap of my railway is about 0.6 of a 16mm scale mile...

I might invest in some track with a larger radius to try and minimilise the wear on the wheels because as you all probably know going round a corner is the hardest thing a locomotive can do and doing it for a mile would probably destroy my wheels on R1.
I am seriously looking into this because I think it would just be interesting to do and be able to say that 1 of my engines did a total mile in 1 session.

If you want to even out the wear on the wheels, you'd probably be best going with a figure of 8 track then so you do the same amount of left and right!

good point!
LGB crossover piece cost a bomb though.
it would be cheaper to just have the wheels replaced afterwards

Paul if you just want to run a mile then measure the length of your track as it wouldn't have to go round as many times. Also the amount of wear on the wheels when covering a mile is non exsistant, remembering my Bertie has done about 180 miles and is only just starting to show wear in the wheels.
