I'm gonna sound like a pr*t.....

Post by DolwyddelanLightRail » Sat Dec 26, 2009 8:56 pm

As some of you may know from my pics of Edrig running in the snow, I had a piece of Mistletoe on edrig to make it more xmassy, and I tried to make sure it didn't touch the smokebox door with a piece of wire, and this moved....

...and it melted to the door    :?

I got the worst off while it was still alight, so there is a small amount still on, and is there any way of getting it off without damaging the paintwork?????

Rub it with meths. Once you've got it off, it might be an idea to rub a little steam oil in to the patch where the meths has come in to contact with the door, it'll just 'revitalise' the paint.

Depends on how much gas you give it, if you turn the gas right up all the time then it's more likely to burn off, I'm thinking about painting mine with FR smokebox paint!

As Will said, you are probably being a bit enthusiastic with the gas, as you are running it in snow that probably doesn't help!

If all else fails, degrease thoroughly and spray matt blaco (or VHT but it doesn't really need it so long as the standard paint is mostly intact). Looks better then, no real engine has a shiny smokebox!

youv got the gas on 2 high, you only need it on a little.

most people think they need their burners turn right up but it just ruins the paint.

Could try polishing it or summit I suppose but I wouldn't bother.

If it's any consolation there's a chip in the paint on mine, I opened it to have a look at the flame while running on blocks and it was tight to shut and a tad on the warm side so I tapped it shut with a pair or pliers, managed to miss the dart and clout the door!

I always clout the door with pliers to shut it properly, I've had no issues with any chips... Must be thicker paint

I allways see how low I can turn the gas and run efficiantly, like a little challenge. In below zero conditions though things are a little different!

Pointy end or handle end?

I blame being distracted by one of my housemates, who is one of those people you have to explain everything to twice 'cos he'll ask a question then ignore your answer- and there's more controls etc on an Accy loco than you'd first think

Blowdown thingy, lubricator, boiler fill (enots or whatever it's called on mine), lubricator drain ;)

Not "controls" in the traditional sense, but nonetheless they need fiddling with and more to the point they all look like controls to the uninitiated, who also wants to know what the motion is for, how the valves work, how the burner works, how you light it, what the chances are of it blowing up etc etc.

Controls was the wrong word, I should have said "look at your engine and think what someone inquisitive but new to steam would point at and ask "whass that?!", it's more than you'd think"

you could but mesh over the burner that makes the burner quiter and also help keep the fire in the back of the boiler
