Geared loco "Chunter Pipe"

Post by Dr. Bond of the DVLR » Tue Nov 24, 2009 7:38 pm

I have bought a sumerlands chuff pipe to see if I can get more noise out of River Alde. These are the preliminary results, a bit more tweeking to do but I think more than a chuff I have achived a nice chunter which a geared loco should produce.
Here are the results of the preliminary video.

I am going to make a sumerlands comercial focussing on safety...

Hey Hey
Listen to this!
Almost real (Although I have never actually heared a full size geared steam loco)
I did not use the Windows Movie maker half speed tool as it makes the sounds go weired Instead I used audacity and did some fiddling with the levels Speed, Pitch etc to give you this!

Lovely noise. In my mind it says:
''no noise, no point''
It makes sense for example. It's a lovely chuffing thing there & I wish me traction engine can do the same.

I just dont like the sound of them. The sound just isnt deep enough and its not a scale sound, its too loud.

Not deep enough?
How much lower can I make it in the vid!!
I get your point I suppose BUT the chuff pipe is a GREAT improvent on not having one at all! It shows the loco is working har dfor its living and lets every one know that this thing is a real steam engine!
I am a great fan of them!

I think engines run much nicer without them.

The running isn't affected by the chuff pipes- What do you mean Mr. Chair?

When you add a chuff pipe to a convetional loco it increases back pressure on the cylinders, which I have found decreases the ability to turn the speed down really low, and also the smoothness of the loco.

Doesn't make a jot of difference as far as I can tell, not on something like an Edrig anyway. I've never heard that from anyone else.

I have run my edrig with both, I can assure you it does make a difference. Plus it doesn't sounds like it's pulling a 12 bogie coach train when only hauling 3 or 4 waggons.
