DVLR Developements

Post by Dr. Bond of the DVLR » Wed Nov 18, 2009 9:40 pm

Right, I am considering adding a balloon loop to the middle of my line. It can not be built at the end as that land "belongs" to my mum! So I shall use that end as a steam up siding.
The balloon loop will be half way between aldebough and the end and will have to be a pretty tigh radious. It will be partly built on raised flowerbed, above the exsiting flowerbeds and partly 4 ft above the stone ground of our courtyard (yikes)
It would have to be about 4ft radious curves which seems pretty tight so still not sure, I am putting woodbridge station there to intercept the trains which will inevitably stop there!
What do we think, I'll do some drawings to show you what I mean and scan them in tomorrow.

Zach, 4ft radius curves are not in anyway tight. All my locos will fly round my balloon loop with its 3ft radius curves
Dan,

I agree with Dan. Sounds good, make sure you add that turntable at the other end then!

On 4 foot radius curves they should be alright, indeed your millie should just slow down nicely if its anything like mine
"What the hell is that?"
"It's a model icebreaker sir."
"It's a bit big isn't it?"
"It's a full scale model sir....."

My curves are 2ft 6in and go ok(ish), would it not be possible to also put in a removable balloon loop at the other end?

nah, have you seen my garden, oh no wait, I'll have to put up some puictrues but after christamas as I have no camera. The other end has a gate so hinged bridge section was built as well as a semi perminent base board for my "Gelerts Farm" on the other corner. The railway runs straigh into the shed where I am building Snape St.
No space at all but I really enjoy shunting and running round etc. The balloon loop will just stop me leeping and running about the courtyard after the trains so much!

thanks, I shall have to enquire about the tracter as it was a present, it gets alot of attention at shows as it is tin plate, clockwork with working gears and hand brake and steering and also the right scale!

I have a Zetor one with a trailer, bought in France when on holiday one year... I feel it's too nice to use on the MHLR though!

Hmmm, here is the plan I wanted to do for Woodbridge Station
Image
Unfortunately I discovered that the out side curves have a radious of less than 3 ft and the inside ones about 2 ft radius!
Arrrrg!
The light blue area in the pictrue is a removeable section- havn't the fogiest where it would be stored, the brown the low level flowerbed and the yellow the flowerbed which would be built on top of the flowerbed at Railway level. Buildings, streets, level crossings and the river Deben would be modeled.
I don't know if this will happen now
I may have to do something different as I have not got a point that goes the correct way for the runround loop!
What are your opinions?

Personally, I'd leave out the run round loop on the balloon loop as it's a bit too sharp, and just have the 3ft radius going round, then the run round on the straight section at the bottom of the pic, if you need one. I know someone with a removable balloon loop, which he only puts in for steam ups. It just unclips from the rest, and has fold up legs so it all goes flat, then it just rests against the wall, or you could hang it up...

If I do that, I would not actually be able to access the station! along the back straight is a wall!hmmm, i shall re think...

Hmmm had a rethink,
Image
By putting the station on the diagonal strate it means no silly tigh radiuses, I would still need to order new points though. If I relocate the buildins to the removable section and make them lowrelief I have an operating pit and also more space on the raised flowerbed for my river and trees and miniature landsacpeing! I shall also post here another option soon that I may have to consider.

and the last one, this has not a balloon loop but does significantly increase the length of the run. The station would end up right near Aldebough so much less runnng around, the removeable part would be much lighter and smaller. The station would be on a large raised flowerbed giving scope for lots of planting and stream etc. Buildings and tramwayness would be included and road bridges etc. The diagonal slot is for a byke which alongside hude great bins have to be stored in the garden but with a screen and plants growin up it this can be blocked. The railway running behind could go through a tunnel.
Just an other idea!#
