Next overhaul project....

Post by Scrat » Sat Dec 02, 2023 9:09 pm

Postman brought a big box (not quite that big...) yesterday:

My next 5" gauge winter project will be:
Guess please, first hint:

BTW Where can I get a replacement horse? This one is missing its tail.

I have seen many things on the wrecks that come in for overhaul, but I have never before seen a blower valve handwheel made from a new penny.

What do you think was in the box?

Judging by the not-black smokebox door, maybe something pre-Victorian?
Far as bodges go, that penny doesn't seem half terrible..

Looking forward to seeing what's next. :D

You are pointing in the right direction.

Next hint:
No steam roller, no traction engine.

We have a winner.

Part-finished 5" model. I just removed a broken bolt from the cylinder block.
She still needs quite a bit of work.

Pics to follow.

She´s in bits now, so this is the only picture I can show:

Had to get a broken screw out of the regulator assembly (fortunately the remaninig bit was long enough).
Removed some play and clatter from the motion, modified the buffer beams, fixed many small issues.
But a long list of small jobs is still there.
Most parts are now primed and ready for painting.
I still need to make a firehole door and the matching hinges, fit whistle valve and whistle and fit some lead underneath to improve traction.
The brake gear is really simple on the prototype so it will be quite easy to make.
Then I will have a test run. If that works, I can start on the many details.

Never would've imagined a traction engine, you don't see many around. That'll be a really interesting project.

Aaron, no, its a railway loco not a traction engine, although the original was built by a traction engine maker.
You must have missed the original thread, which did wander a bit. :D

Well technically I think it's a rail traction engine. I'm pretty sure that's what Aaron meant.

some progress:

first coat of Vermillion on the buffer beams, first coat of mid Brunswick green on the wheels and some minor parts.
Paint is good quality but takes a long time to dry.
Next steps will be painting other parts and making a firehole door.
I have a whistle and matching valve but no idea yet where to put them without spoiling the overall look of the engine.

Aren’t all railway locomotives “traction engines” if one is being really, really annoyingly technical and pedantic?

Started running on air last weekend.

Smokebox horse has received a replacement tail.

Found suitable mounting positions for whistle and valve.

Firehole door still to be made.

Maybe she will run under her own steam still this year.

Finally got around to make the firehole door.
As there is almost no space around it this was a bit tricky.
Clearances to any boiler fitting are 1mm.

Now I am waiting fo the storm to go somewhere else so I can test the loco.
