Having finished my water tower I was wondering what to do next and my mind wandered back to these discussions about Shays from last November and I just wonder whether Steve or Trevor have progressed any further?

The Colin Binnie drawings for the Left Hand Shay are Ok but don't give a feel of the actual loco's in my head so I went looking for pictures of it. Guess what, I found one and guess where I found it...On here! https://gardenrails.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10205
The YT video's of the Meccano based version in the links are interesting as well. I haven't studied them properly yet, but I think there might be some pointers to the drive shaft question.

I have not taken this any further wrt drawings - but the stl files for what I have done are in the files section.

I did think about the drive shafts and I think there is a simpler solution.

Each end of each carden shaft has a ball on it, and through that ball, a rod is inserted at 90 degrees to the shaft. The ends of the motor shaft and the bogie shafts have a tube on them. The ball is a sliding fit in the tube, and the tube has a slot in it wide enough for the rod to fit in. The trick would be to make sure that as the bogies swivel the rod and ball can't come out of the tube, or stop the bogie rotating.

It is a simple flexible joint which used to be used on model boats - at least that is where I got the concept from.

Just had a quick flick through, it does look very impressive. I also found one on Thingi.. but he used two motors, the main traction moter and a small N20 gearmotor driving the cylinder/crank mech via a brass gear between the two cranks. It ran well enough but that gear was very obvious.
