Reopening of the heritage Zig Zag railway.

The ZZR is about 100 miles west of Sydney NSW, in the Blue Mountains. The line was built in the 1860s and superseded by a new line around 1915.

The track bed lay abandoned till the 1970s (I remember driving along part of it in the 1960s) then resurrected by volunteers using Queensland 3’-6”gauge stock. At the time NSW railways were anti-heritage and would not sell anything to heritage groups!

The ZZR suffered much damage to rolling stock and workshops in bushfires and has been closed for 10 years. But finally it runs again.

Two ‘legs’of the zig zag (switchback) are used – the 3rd (bottom) leg is still used as the main line to the west (standard gauge). The mountain scenery is spectacular and the beautiful sandstone viaducts are magnificent.
