2023 Great Steam Train Race Australia

Post by gregh » Mon Jun 12, 2023 12:45 am

Four steam trains ‘race’ in parallel along the line from near Newcastle to Maitland, New South Wales, Australia.

The locos are
Garratt 6029, Pacific 3801, 5917 and Victorian R766
The location is the 4 tracks in the Hunter valley, 100 miles north of Sydney, two of which are the ‘normal’ general freight and passenger lines and the other 2 are the ‘coal lines’. I noticed in one of the comments someone said they were unused lines. In fact the coal lines carry around a quarter of a million tonnes of coal a day to the world’s largest coal export terminal.
We should be grateful that the track owners, ARTC are interested enough in heritage to allow the coal lines to be closed for this event.
Even if you don’t watch the whole video, the opening shots of the ‘starting line’ are a must!
