Re: Cardboard Hunslet
The first objective was to find a more powerful chassis. So, I turned to a favourite of mine, the LGB ToyTrain 'Otto' motor block.
It was cut down and the running plate butchered to make it fit.
This, as you can probably see, has been lounging in my bits-box for a long time. It needed new wheelsets as the worm wheels were worn out. The wheels have been recycled (geddit ) from another clapped out motor block.

Re: Cardboard Hunslet
At this stage, I knew I'd have to add some lead ballast and so cut out an appropriate chunk of lead flashing to fit beneath the running plate.
More will be needed and so, once I've fitted all the gubbins inside the body, I'll cram as much as possible elsewhere.
Re: Cardboard Hunslet
The body was stiffened by adding more card bracing and some extra thin tabs. It's now feels a lot less flimsy.
.. some new springs......
.... a tank filler .....
..... and a smokebox door.
Not happy with the smokebox door. If I print it on the FDM printer, I get more detailing but the dome on the door is too stepped. When I print it on the resin printer, the stepping is less obvious but the detailing is somehow flattened as well. I'm redrawing it to exaggerate the detailing.
I'm now in the process of 3D printing some fittings. A new chimney...

Re: Cardboard Hunslet
I'm also working on the motion for the motor block - which was missing.
New coupling rods....
..... and cylinders. I'm going to make the slide rods, crosshead and piston rod from metal. I'm not sure how robust they would be 3D printed.
I'll update you on progress as ..... errr .... I progress.

PS - I'll post all the 3D printable bits on the 3D printing thread when I've finished tweaking them. Just in case anyone else is brave (or daft) enough to follow in my footsteps

Been spending a bit of time working on the motion. Not quite finished it yet, but at least I know it works.
Not glued the fittings in place as yet. Waiting until I've got them all done.

Re: Cardboard Hunslet
Looks a lot better that Rik. But try and get a used motor block for 32mm gauge and it's like finding fish swimming in the desert....

Re: Cardboard Hunslet
Now almost finished. A fair bit of additional detailing and fitted out with Micron RC and a MLS soundcard.
The roof hasn't been glued down yet - I need to tweak the sound settings a bit more (the chuffs need to be better synched) - the soundcard is under the cab roof (an early one with preset pots for the settings). The video reveals there's too much empty space under the running plate and she needs a whistly on the roof - but almost there.

Re: Cardboard Hunslet
Would I make another loco from card?
I don't think so.
On the plus side, card is easily worked and glued but, because the mounting board used in the kit is white, the white edges show through as soon as the loco it handled. It would be better if the mounting board was black. Also, any detailing glued to the card is easily dislodged because the mounting board readily delaminates. I'm wondering if soaking the card in shellac might improve this.
An advantage of card is that the livery can be printed on beforehand and so fairly complex lining can be added. However, the surface is easily scratched and, with the sort of rough handling my locos experience, I can see it becoming quite tatty very quickly. Maybe several coats of varnish will help to protect it???

Re: Cardboard Hunslet
There is no doubt you have done a magnificent job of making it look and run well. My opinion is that the original cardboard cut-out kit is aimed at a starter in the 16mm scale market and the additional work you have put in would be beyond that person. Also the material costs would be prohibitive and dependent on having specialist equipment to carry it out.
Having built another of those kits myself I would not be happy with the result and have turned down a request to build one for a friend for that reason.
Still, a most informative experiment on your behalf and a useful addition to the Forum library for others to learn from.

Re: Cardboard Hunslet
Night and day difference with that kit Rik it looks fantastic now. I would have thought a couple of good coats with Poly varnish or similar would keep the colour but fill the end grain of the card. In hindsight once the parts are cleaned up thats probably the best time to soak them before assembly. I found that after 3d printing a few pieces of stock I was quite disenfranchised with constructing things that were near enough. For a bit of extra effort you can build exactly what you want and not have to work through these sorts of problems.
Re: Cardboard Hunslet
Thanks Rik you have given me inspiration to finish this :-[
Was supposed to be an 0-6-0 ,but could,nt the chassis I wanted so I have spares of these a Playmobil motor block so a sort of Irish 4-4-0t - Attachments

That really works well! Well worth finishing.

Re: Cardboard Hunslet
Mmmm, if I could find a suitable chassis I think I would give one a go. It would be better for a small child to run then let them have run my steamer or any of the electric loco's I have. For the money it would be worth it I think, just the chassis stopping me.
Really great job though on your's Rik, it looks fantastic. I don't know much about syncing the sound card to the chauffeurs, but it sounded great for me.
