I have recently taken some time out to start the CAD work for a new loco, it is far from finished, indeed a long way off yet. It's a Hunslet 45mm called either Stephen or Hughie (24430 or 21970), depending on which name plate I eventually decide to give it. I know there are many that like the 2' gauge loco's (including myself) but this is one of the rarer 3' gauge Hunslet's, pretty much as it was built, well, I am trying for it to be that way. I will likely put the build up as it goes along.

Note that in the second picture the firebox door is slightly ajar, this is because I intend to put a flickering LED inside the firebox area. And yes, the whistle is currently facing the wrong way, lol.

Not too sure about the all-over yellow livery but looking good otherwise!

Interesting that you've included the motor and gears in the drawing at this stage. I tend to figure that out later - but then I'm a self confessed bodger

Me too, me too. . I usually have a general idea of what I think might work, but it usually doesn't, first time around.

A little update, I think that's the bulk of the CAD work done, just the printing and then redoing the CAD work and then repeating cycle begins.

Sorry, it's been a bit slack on this thread.

So, a long way down the line, after many hours (weeks!) of busy busy with one thing and another, I managed to find some time in between to make progress on this.

No build shots I am afraid, but here it is, from paper, to CAD, to working model The model is papered first instead of lots of sanding and filling. Exceptions which I forgot to do is the buffer beams

Ignore the roof fitting, this has since been changed for a new roof and different way of fitting it without using Blutack, oh, and the missing rivets etc etc etc, I am aware of all it's faults

Note that just about everything is printed in either filament or resin, except metal rails (hand rail knobs are printed) , some round metal pipework (all junctions and connectors are resin), axles, bearings and the usual parts most of us can't make like gears etc are purchased.

A quick test run, "not really made for the public" as such, more of a record that it actually worked at some point The line was actually in need of a sweep, hence it was just up and down.

The motor is a 285 MFA motor, gears are nylon with 3mm axles. Motion is all printed and designed by me. Everything was done in Tinkercad except the flanges of the steam dome and chimney which were done in Fusion 360.

That's a real beauty Steve. I love the colour and weathering, great job!

Excellent! I used Hughie / Stephen to guide the detailing of my cardboard Hunslet but, of course, it's not a patch on this.

I can find a 280 and a 385 MFA motor. Just wondered which one you used and which voltage.
I've not yet got around to seriously making my own chassis (apart from a couple with were based on LGB and Bachmann motor blocks) but I'm interested in moving in that direction
