My first loco

Post by Hancockshire » Fri Jul 17, 2009 11:46 am

I recently recieved an e-mail saying that there's a paper round available for me & due to that note I need a proper loco. So, can you guys find me the cheapest prototypical engine around (so far my fave is the locomotion cackler).

yeah I agree, the cackler is the cheapest one, but if you get an extra £200, you could get one of those very nice quarry hunslets from finescale.

How much money do you get from your paper round?

And provided you are prepared to wait two or three years for it to be built.

Why do you need to go prototypical? you could buy a free lance loco and make it unique! This way you get to make up what the prototype is and it is cheaper!

Bear in mind that live steam locos tend to hold their value quite well, especially if they are well looked-after. So even if you've got your heart set on a prototype engine, you could save enough money to buy a cheap freelance engine and run that until you've saved the balance, then sell the cheap engine and buy the more expensive one. This would allow you to get a live steamer running more quickly, which is always helps to maintain interest.

Well, I'd say a Roundhouse Bertie would be brilliant if your after a cheap, but prototypical loco. Yes, I know it's not an exact model of a prototype, but certainly has very strong resemblenses of a Bagnall 0-4-0ST...

Well possibly, you could, but you'd need a Millie gas tank or something as the Bertie one is the height of the cab.

Having a millie I forgot that some roundhouse locos come with large cylindrical gas tanks. Sorry a senile moment there I fear. Being 15 this is rather worrying!

Relax, we all have senior moments sometimes

(And therefore I think they shouldn't be called senior moments. It's age discrimination!  :P )

Find another job? Perhaps go and mow peoples lawns, or whatever... I was planning to do that this summer, but sadly I can't due to weather!

Can't. Only old people live here & they don't want a Stranraerian teenager nicking their stuff.
