5"gauge grain hopper wagon

I wanted to practise welding of long straight joints.
Tgpps grain hopper wagons are made up of many straight plates so this was the ideal object.
BUT:
The grain can only be emptied through a pipe between the frames, so a pit and conveyor belt would be needed.
So another idea was needed.

The two roof sections can be lifted off.
One holds charcoal, the other side holds the barbecue set.

After a bit of running at a meeting yesterday I parked the train in a siding that is not directly visible from the main line and fired up the barbecue.
A friend took a seat on the wagon behind the barbecue wagon and put the sausages on.
I went back to my driving truck and drove onto the mainline and into the main station.

You should have seen the faces of the other folks.....

Still some detailing to do on the roof and loading doors.
So if the trip takes a little longer or the line is blocked, no problem.

I do like that!

I really like the way the true purpose of the wagon is hidden until it's meal time...

What a brilliant idea. A stylish and practical item of rolling stock.

Love it. Does the charcoal require air from underneath to burn, or does it burn happily in a simple "trough", so to speak?

Hi Aaron,

The barbecue hopper is open at the bottom (square of about 6 x 6 cm).
In order to get top air there is a gap of 1 cm between inner hopper side panels and the edge of the coal grate.
Coal grate consists of four elements.
Natural draught is enough for a good fire.

The opening also serves another purpose.
When we had finished eating I pushed the wagon into the steaming bay, put a tin tub under the barbecue hopper, flipped the grates upward so the charcoal fell into the tub. This tub was then handed over to the next steaming bay and the burning charcoal was used to fire up my Prussian P3.1
Nothing gets lost.....
