As you may have seen from the 3D printing thread, I am embarking on a new adventure - an 0-16.5 representation of parts of the Glyn Valley Tramway.

Firstly, as rationale for this choice of prototype

• I seldom use the 45mm gauge test track in my workshop as the curves are a bit tight
• I fancy having something inside which I can work on during the winter
• 0-16.5 would suit the location well
• The GVT is a shoo-in for 0-16.5 as in 7mm scale 16.5mm track is around 2' 4.5" gauge
• The Glyn Valley is less than an hour's drive away
• I love the locos and the rolling stock, especially the 4 wheeled coaches
• I intend to 3D print everything to keep costs down
• The railway carried slightly more goods than passengers - so appeals to my love for freight management
• I already have accumulated a reasonable library of books and photos of the railway and trackbed

On the latter point, I went to the NGRS library today (at Apedale) and borrowed a couple of their books and got a few more photos from their archives (one of which is attached). Just to whet your appetites (not a picture I've seen published before ..........

Although not primarily a garden railway, there is scope for me to extend the workshop line into the great outdoors - as they say, watch this space!!

I'm sure I remember somebody who was really reluctant to start 3D printing because he wasn't sure he could justify the expense, etc.

Hi Rik,

Sounds like a good idea and a great project. I share our fascination with the GVT and look forward to seeing this develop. Considering the drop in temperatures this morning I'm sure most peoples thoughts have turned to indoor projects.

That's a great picture, full of useful detail - but what an odd place to have hooked off and left a raft of vehicles!

My thinking as well - seems strange to leave the stock across the points unless the photo was taken in the midst of shunting operations

At least once done, you can simply size it to any other scale, within reason.

I know you have a selection of GVT books etc, but just in case you missed this one, there is a 7mm Narrow Gauge Assoc, Narrow Lines Extra, No. 9, Buildings & Structures, which has a few GVT buildings drawings in. It has some Southwold drawings as well, so you probably do have it, but better safe than sorry.

Actually, I don't think I do have that. I might try tracking it down.

I thought I'd look for a copy of the hardback book "Rails to Glyn Ceiriog : Part 2" which has drawings and plans. It retails for £65 so I thought I'd get it as a combined Christmas and birthday present. The only (secondhand) copy I can find is ....... £950!!!

Unfortunately, the NGRS library doesn't have a copy either otherwise I'd borrow theirs .....

BTW The rotating image was created using this freebie website - https://gifcap.dev/

It enables you to capture any part of the screen and turn it into an animated gif. So I got it to record me rotating the TinkerCAD drawing of the loco which is why there's a hiccup at the end where it loops back to the start. My scrolling isn't as steady as it could be .....

Just thinking Rik, what power unit/chassis are you going to use, or will you print and scratchbuild that as well?

I've bought a Hornby Old Smokey loco so I thought I'd use that and print a pony truck for it.

More or less got the loco body drawn now. A few slight adjustments and then I can start printing

It's been a while since I posted anything on progress. As this is more of an indoor (or rather an in-shed) railway than a Garden Railway I feel it shouldn't take up too much forum space. However, for those who are interested, here's how far I've reached.....

1 x Loco, 1 x Closed Third coach, 1 x Open Third coach, 3 x mineral wagons, 1 x brake van

As you can see, they all need tidying up and painting, but things are progressing ....

Looks great Rik. It's been a long while since I modelled in O-16.5 and back then 3D printers weren't a thing, so it's really interesting to see how good your prints are looking in 7mm scale!

Would your files scale to 16mm scale? This is one that is high on my to do list

I'm more or less certain they will. I've not tried rescaling any of them as yet, but I can't see any reason why they can't.

I've still got a few more items of stock to draw; a couple of coach variations, a van, a slate wagon, a bolster wagon and I want to redo the mineral wagon which I downloaded from Thingiverse. I also want to draw the other d sign of loco, so I'm not yet ready to start rescaling what I've done so far. However, I'll happily post them in the 3D section if anyone fancies having a go in the meantime.
