Double sided sticky pads which actually work?!
Double sided sticky pads which actually work?!
Does anyone know of a brand of double sided sticky pads which actually work?
I've tried several brands, including those which are supposed to be weather proof, and all of them fail after a year or so. I use them primarily to stick soundcard speakers inside cab roofs but they are also handy for all sorts of other uses on the railway. Well they would be if they worked!!

Hi Rik,
Use any '3M VHB' double sided tape product, just make sure surfaces are scrupulously clean first. They do rolls of tape or sticky pads (link for pads here) https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Square-Doubl ... 176&sr=8-8.
Recommended product in the auto accessories industry.
Hope that helps.

Not tried them. I'll certainly give them a try, thanks!Lonsdaler wrote: ↑Sun May 30, 2021 1:44 pm Hi Rik,

I think it will do the trick, Rik. But as I said, make sure the area where you apply it is absolutely clean/degreased.ge_rik wrote: ↑Sun May 30, 2021 4:03 pmNot tried them. I'll certainly give them a try, thanks!Lonsdaler wrote: ↑Sun May 30, 2021 1:44 pm Hi Rik,

Re: Double sided sticky pads which actually work?!
I had the same problem and gave up with sticky pads years ago. I now use Sellotape brand velcro. Works well, and it pulls apart and sticks back together!

Thank Tony
That sounds like a good solution
I've sent off for some 3M automotive tape and will give that a try but hold your solution in reserve.

Re: Double sided sticky pads which actually work?!
Note, if looking for this, Sellotape label it as 'Sellotape Hooks & Loops' here in Oz. I'd assume it would be the same in the UK.
Velcro is a trademark of a separate company and make their own version. It may have improved, but the adhesive on the Velcro brand dots I tried many years ago didn't stick very well, unlike the velcro itself.
I use a double sided foam tape made by 3M which sticks like the proverbial brown stuff to a blanket (and is just about as difficult to remove).........

Ah yes, "Sellotape Sticky Hook & Loop Strips" here.

I have been using the 3m sticky pads to hold DCC decoders to motors and parts of a chassis for some years, make sure everything is clean, give the surface a wee rub with a wire brush or stick, re-clean and apply.
The only partial failure I've had was my own fault for trying to oil a motor and some oil went where it wasn't intended to go.

All very intriguing. I know this sounds very nerdy, but I'm actually really looking forward to it arriving.
Whenever we visit a hardware or DIY store, my wife has noticed I spend a good bit of my time browsing the section on adhesives. I now have a drawer full of all sorts of different types including things like pipe weld, different types of epoxies, superglues and various contact adhesives.....

If ever you want a little trip out, get yourself over to Montgomery, and spend a morning in Bunners Hardware. It is a hardware store as they used to be, and stocks everything you never knew you neededge_rik wrote: ↑Mon May 31, 2021 3:41 pm All very intriguing. Well my wife loves it as much as I do, as they sell all kinds of kitchenware as well as garden ornaments/tools etc. In fact, she usually comes away with more then me!ge_rik wrote: ↑Mon May 31, 2021 10:17 pmNow that sounds like fun ...... Re: Double sided sticky pads which actually work?!
Well. It works for me. Not sure how I'd glue my 3D printed PLA models together without it. And the swing bridge I constructed from uPVC trim and stuck together with Superglue in 2009 is still holding up well, apart from when I kicked it with my Welly while stepping over it - and even then the plastic broke rather than the glue bonded joints.

I think it's like most things, a lot depends on the quality of the glue. I use the thick industrial strength stuff which the chaps who do soffits and fascias use. A lot of the thin stuff from pound shops is, as you say, neither super nor glue ....

Re: Double sided sticky pads which actually work?!
I remember when SG first appeared. Early 1970s, I think. It was great. It would stick anything to anything and let off smoke as it dried. When I worked in London we glued a 50p coin to the pavement outside the office. Many sides were split as we watched hapless pedestrians try to pick it up. I think it was there for a week before somebody managed to shift it.
And then people started gluing themselves together with it. It has not been the same since.
Perhaps the stuff you use is OK, but the stuff I see is the "10 bottles for a quid" stuff as I try to clean up a brass loco body where solder has proved too much of a challenge and SG has been used instead. A 16mm Association "Victory" is on my bench at the moment having been assembled in this way. It doesn't work.

Re: Double sided sticky pads which actually work?!
I don't know if it's me or what, but I've noticed that epoxy doesn't seem to be what it was. I can remember Araldite being really effective when I was a teenager (50+ year ago), but whether it's no longer what it was or I'm viewing the past through rose tinted specs ....?
I bought a secondhand IP Engineering whitemetal Plate Frame Simplex which someone had Araldited together - and it just fell apart. I cleaned it up and reassembled it with low melt solder (my first experience with it), and the difference is remarkable. Solid as a rock - and I'll admit my soldering is not the world's best!
