Plasticard still has a place for me, sometimes it's nice to just "kit bash" something up rather than have to go into in depth design first. For corners and detail, 3D printing does come into it's own, but it does come with it's own pro's and con's, like learning a CAD program, that's quite a steep learning curve, or it was for me, whereas a plate plate can't be beaten in plasticardBertieB wrote: ↑Mon May 03, 2021 9:03 pm Very nice indeed. Enjoyable discussion on how some of it has been achieved too.
I’ve droned on about this before (apologies) but playing with plasticard and conventional materials, to attempt this sort of thing, can just look like barking up the wrong tree now. Gosh.

I may order some enamal paints and give it a go, who knows. I will be looking for lining tape and seeing what I can find. I have used water slides before and they are holding up well on one of my steamers.Lonsdaler wrote: ↑Tue May 04, 2021 9:56 am That is shaping up to be a really nice loco Steve. Lining with Trimline tape will be a good start to providing the 'finishing touches'. Like you, I've been in possession of a lining pen for many years, and have yet to use it in 'anger'. Not possessing a 3d printer, I was hoping to treat myself to a PDF Fairlie's Double - hopefully someone will be able to continue the business.

Managed to design and print some sand pot handles today as well as fit the opening windows, not much more to do other than the dreaded lining, which I just don't know what direction that will take in all honesty.

I used to use Humbrol, back in the day when it was Humbrol. Haven't tried it with the more recent stuff though.
These days I think I'd be tempted to give it a go with acrylics and a Bow pen. That way, if you get a nasty, a drop of water will have it off without any problems. Try it on a piece of scrap before you let loose on the loco though.

I gave the loco a very short test run today on my step father's track, to say the least they were very pleased with it. The motion is just so controllable, I couldn't believe just how well it ran, I too was also very pleased with it.

You have every right to feel pleased with that Steve, it runs so smoothly and looks great.

Re: Can you tell what it is yet?
Runs as well as it looks. Very well done Steve.
I'd like to see it negotiating curves though. Not that I have any doubt that it will, but I'd like to see how the bogie swivel performs. Do you know what radius it will go round yet?

Re: Can you tell what it is yet?
Once I get around to clearing all the "crap" off my line like, leaves, pigeon shite, walnut shells, ballast dug up by birds and squirrels, you will see just that, lol
Saying that, a good friend of mine now has the loco and he is seeing what he can do about some lining, it might just be white stripes, we shall wait and see

That is impressive, Steve. Not a hint of stiffness which is quite remarkable for a test run (well in my experience)!

Yup, unusual for me too I was very pleased with how slow and controllable it was, whilst at the same time was very powerful and fast. I just need to get some couplings on it and get some coaches behind it

Re: Can you tell what it is yet?
A good friend of mine took the time and patience to put some lining on my loco for me. I think he has done a brilliant job and I am very very happy with it. He also put on some coal bunkers for me which I didn't know he was going to do so that was a very pleasant surprise.
Just some name plates and some couplings to go and I think I will be happy calling it complete for my purposes.

I honestly don't know I believe it is some form of stick on lining as he said it will another top coat to stop it lifting. Never the less, I think it's an impeccable job and I can't thank him enoughPeter Butler wrote: ↑Fri Jun 04, 2021 1:49 pm That is really neat lining and suits it so well, how is it done?

A final coat of Satin lacquer (except the smoke-boxes) will seal the lining and give a lovely overall sheen to the loco. You must feel so proud of the work you have put into it, top marks.

Yup, I was thinking a nice satin finish too (except the smoke boxes)Peter Butler wrote: ↑Fri Jun 04, 2021 4:44 pm A final coat of Satin lacquer (except the smoke-boxes) will seal the lining and give a lovely overall sheen to the loco. To be honest, I am as pleased as punch with it and seeing it now makes all those weeks of CAD work morph into something real that I seriously like and I am very pleased with how it's turned out. I guess the CAD work is just another side to creations that all of us make in one form or another.
Just got to do mine now and then make the boilers for a "Super Fairlie"

That is an amazing job, well done. The lining is superbly done and as I expected, it lifts a good model to another level.

Re: Can you tell what it is yet?
I did not do the lining, a good friend of mine did and he has way more patience than me I do agree though, the lining has turned a good model into an even better looking model
