I wonder if they were just using up the half empty tins they had lying about the workshop

Mind you, when it's that size you could paint it matt Battleship Grey and it still wouldn't blend unobtrusively into the background!
I enjoyed the captions - particularly the very apt description of the loco as a "steam beast"...
