I decided to take a short break from casting the 5-arch viaduct for the Rylston Light whilst awaiting a mould hardening. I had some reclaimed timber from an earlier bridge which I thought would make a nice ballast bin for a PW hut. Mostly I kept the reclaimed in its naturally weathered form but needed to tone down some new-cut ends. I thought a final coat of mat varnish would fix the effect. To my initial horror the varnish dried white, but on closer examination I feel the final effect is better than I could have achieved by planning. Just not sure how I reproduce this effect!

Anyone have other examples of lucky successes?

Looks like you planned it that way. Trying to think of any lucky happenstances but most of my disasters seem to remain as disasters....
