Ah my misunderstanding! Simplicity is the winner every time!

The new ballast in 1965 looked a lot like leftover dust and various fines from the quarry. Funny how standards of trackwork have risen since those days. Also calling the sleepers "ties"..

We took a family trip to the National Railroad Museum (in Green Bay- wish I could see the one in York but I'm in the wrong nation). I snapped a few reference shots where I could.

I've had some trouble understanding droplights since US coaches tended to feature double-hung windows instead. Seeing one in person helped me understand how the whole thing goes together and works, what the strap was for, etc. There's also a French forty-and-eight boxcar there that (to my American eyes) bears a strong resemblance to the Southwold Short Van I'm building from one of Rik's 3d designs. I may take some detailing hints from this one. I'll keep looking through my photos and see if there's anything more worth posting. (Most of them are my kids, but I don't think anybody else needs a reference to model them. )

Great photos. I really like those gadgets in front of the wheels on the locks, presumably for clearing debris off the rails.

Watched some videos of it on youtube lately. Nice to see another pre-grouping loco where it belongs - at the head of a train.

The laser-cut MDF kit from Invicta Model Works is a good starter to add further detail which produces a perfectly satisfactory model. Welsh Mare from Sleich is a perfect fit....
