A new player in the field of rolling stock manufacture, Jerry Irwin makes excellent 16mm scale models which can be supplied ready to run, unfinished, for you to paint yourself. This is a very cost effective way of building up a stable of stock. Currently there are 9 different models to choose from, with more on the drawing board.
They are made from high quality MDF which takes paint well. Supplied with Binnie wheels on steel axles running in ball-races they run very smoothly. I have just completed a brake van for a friend and have been most impressed with the design and build quality..... Minimum preparation was required for spray painting the main body with one coat of primer and two top coats, which give a perfect finish. The brake-gear is particularly well designed and bolt-heads clearly defined on the chassis and strapping. Buffers are supplied but not fitted as there is a vertical slot to select a height to suit your existing vehicles.....
Another of his superb kits is a bridge of 1 metre span with twin tracks capacity capable of 13kg per track. Available in kit form only with over 500 laser cut parts! Stress testing can be seen at....

That is what I call a bridge!

I'd be very concerned about it getting wet out in the garden though, MDF soaks up moisture like a sponge. I'd hate to do all the construction work only to see it swell, buckle and twist.

The bridge would indeed not last long untreated left outside.
Also, if treated / painted there will be areas that will not be covered.( inside box sections )
Advice is to make it removable and store indoors when not in use.

Those models look really good. What a revolutionary idea to provide a brake van kit that actually has brakes!

That bridge is a work of art. If I had one, I'd give it a bath in S1 systems penetrating epoxy and for all intents and purposes it would turn to steel and be just fine in the garden.

I live in Virginia, which is pretty humid, and have several MDF built vehicles. No problems so far, but I am pretty careful to blast everything with undercoat to seal it before final erection. I would not leave it outside, but it is fine for rolling stock.

By the way, that BV looks as though it needs a dirty great "N E" painting on the side as it is very reminiscent of the smaller late NER/early LNER vans.
