I'm no expert, by any means, but McCormick Deering became International Harvester, I believe.
I think this is one of their "Hit & Miss" engines mounted on a trolley. The extended hub on the top picture I think would have driven a belt to some other piece of machinery. Perhaps Rik could use it in his sawmill?!

It's a nice model for a start!
My guess it is a stationary or oil engine usually permanently sited and linked by belt to some light agricultural machinery or driving a generator.
These are very popular with exhibitors at steam fairs frequently pumping water or lighting bulbs.
Is it correct scale for you to use on the railway Tom?

Whatever it is and it is a very nice model, it is suitably weathered. It does look like it was portable with the handles has they are, so it could well be like Peter says a water pump, but it was taken to where ever it was needed.

These are called Hit and Miss engines big in the States and lovely to watch running and your model is really nice.

Saw one on Shed and Buried last night, but unfortunately I turned on to the channel has it was ending….
