Garden railways don't run on steam or electric rather wine and Jedi master level patience

Imagine doing that at scale speed, they would need crew changes.

Can certainly see why the paintwork looked so battered in the other pics. shown elsewhere on the forum, falling over quite a few times. Be interesting to know how often the lubricator was drained/topped up.

First hand experience: It's the most qualified locomotive to do it!

Amazing they didn't get James May in on this, its exactly the sort of thing he would do, in point of fact he did do something very similar on the Barnstaple - Bideford route with 00 gauge models, need I say they did'nt fare as well as that Silver lady

Shame it was such a dull loco I would have chosen something more interesting.

The Silver Lady was my first live steamer and has been faultless.

Bear in mind they will most pikely have had to replace parts as they go, 71 miles is a long distance, so having to machine new one off components would be highly impractical and the reassurance of replacement parts availability will have been a determining factor in their choice of loco
I'm more dissapointed that it wasn't pulling anything

To complete the challenge (key word here as this was a technical exercise and not meant to be a model railway) pulling rolling stock would of added to the list of 'what can go wrong'.
I think we should all be congratulating Roundhouse that one of their locos could achieve this task.
I doubt any other provider of live steam in this scale could of supplied a loco and parts support to complete the journey in the required time frame and at the price of this particular Roundhouse loco.

Thanks for posting James, I have got it on record so I can view it again and again.
Agree with Tom, not everyone is interested in prototypes, glad it was a live steamer, will be watching it with Anne, she is getting more and more into Railways now, then ever she did when I was doing N Gauge even though she did book weekends away on heritage lines. She was the one who came and told me about the program on Sunday. :thumb right:
PS, Still doing N but nowhere near has much now.

Just watched episode one and found it generally entertaining.... nice to see how many 'ordinary' people are actively involved with railway modelling, either as club members or individually. I'm glad that has been put into the storyline right from the start. As for the 'professionals' involved in decision making and man-management..... hmmmm!!!!!!
Ambitious project, difficult terrain, all learning on-the-job, let's hope things improve next week, although from the preview I have doubts.

Saw an article in the Times (yesterday?) About the series which claimed that Railway Modelling is the second most popular hobby after angling. I hadn't realised that.Peter Butler wrote: โSun Jan 07, 2018 9:20 pm .. nice to see how many 'ordinary' people are actively involved with railway modelling, either as club members or individually. Re: 71 Mile Garden Railway anyone?? Channel 4 - 7th Jan
I was expecting to watch from behind the sofa, thinking it was going to be cringeworthy in the extreme, but overall I thought it positive. As has already been pointed out the some of the team leadership, man ( and woman) management, and co-ordination fell short but then I guess they were a thrown together bunch without much in the way of prior planning meetings.
I thought the Silver Lady probably the ideal loco for the job.
