Question to the collective wisdom. The time for the test steaming is getting closer. What, where is a good source of a metal fan suitable for the Llewellyn works to build a steam raising fan blower ?

The fan is easy to make - perhaps more readily available than a bought fan.
It is just a hub, soldered to a brass disc, and brass strips soldered onto it radially. No actual "fan" - it just works on centrifugal force expelling the smoke.

Thanks Trevor, your reply is much appreciated. All adds to my library of research.

Connected the blower up, it twitches. I am not confident about the actual valves. I will not be surprised it I have to remake them with an O ring seat design which appears to be better for servo control. I would have done that from the start if I knew what I know now. We will see when I test steam.

I’m genuinely excited to see this beauty in steam! If it’s any help I used a tenmille etch to speed up the building of my blower, seems to work quite nicely

Steady progress in the Red Room. The list of remaining projects on this build is diminishing. Very soon the final assembly for the test steam will commence. FYI some pics of the jobs done these last few months.

More cladding
Insulation is yet to be fitted.

I was keen on the Queensland Railway, Hunslet style of cladding corner in the cab.
I was not sure how but it come to mind to use brass tube. It worked out first go.
Turned a former for my tube bender. A wee bit smaller than required as the tube will spring a bit
IMG_8533 by
Darrell McCulloch, on Flickr
Annealed the 5/16 tube a few times. The formers are such it captures the whole the tube and thus it does not distort or flatten out.
IMG_8534 by
Darrell McCulloch, on Flickr
I was too engrossed to take pictures, but I scribe/marked the tube and used thin Dremel cut off wheels in my die grinder to slice the tube till I had a 110/120 degree corner left and then cleaned it up on 400 grit on a small surface plate to give two straight edges. Then fit and 12BA screws to the crinoline ribs. 14ba would look better but I am not yet set up with 14ba in the Red Room. I must sort that out soon. Any how, it is a freelance garden steamer, not a exhibition model.

Goodall valve. LG2 bronze. Quad ring trick to hold the domes. Quad ring is a four sided O ring. I ripped this idea off from MAM's Roundhouse loco. It suddenly dawned on me why they put O Rings on their boiler bungs.

So the whole cab and thanks can be removed without anything being disturbed. This is the by pass valve. I am not confident the actual valve will work satisfactorily , I maybe remaking this after steam testing

Stays behind then the tank/cab is lifted. The right hand one now has a 2mm hole for one of the twin antennas from the receiver to poke through. The other antenna will poke up through the tank lid.

Domes and stuff. Well the remaining job list is getting smaller, I have to knock these over. To be honest I am getting tired of it, I want the loco done. The plan is test steam, do some carriage kits and get in the mood to learn how to paint. I hate paint. Learn how to line nicely. I hate painting on any thing, any size. Then paint this loco. There is a change in plans for the next project. It was to be a 5" loco,QR C17 #253 in detail but that is to held off for a few more years as it is a huge project. Next will be a 4 1/2" scale Foden steam lorry. I like Fodens, time I have one. Anyhow a lump of 32mm brass bar arrives.

he plan was to have two domes, one for the safety and one will be a QR style sand dome to cover the Goodall valve. (if the effing water pump is too much hassle, be done with that)
But MAM said, "Should not the safety valve be under some thing like what is on my loco ? "
Heck she is right. What was I thinking. I did say I was tired of it all and I am pushing myself to have some thing actually steam.

The squirt bottle tube fits down the dome into the Goodall valve. This is a cap for the dome. A wee bit like a QR sand dome cap.

I think I am ready to reassemble all properly, sort issues that are discovered and test steam , oh I have to make the steam raising unit. That is next.
I am sort of nervous about the test steam. It was like when I tested the chassis on air. I realised the time has arrived, but I was reluctant, but no, it is time , do it. I think it is because it is my first steam loco. Once my virginity is busted I will be OK :-)

WOW Dazza, this is the first thing I have read on the forum since my recent illness and I have to say.....What a blooming genius you are. I so do wish I could come and stay with a master like you. You have exceptional skills and show how to achieve it in a way that outshines most. I am sure that we all want to see this thing of beauty steam up and run along your line.
I am having to go for a rest now, because the posting has tired me out and it has taken up my allotted time on the forum

Absolutely stunning work, as we have come to expect, Dazza.
It sounds like you have reached the penultimate milestone....... steaming!!
Fingers and toes crossed - but I have every confidence in your workmanship.
Rik
PS Love the careful work and finish on the safety valve cover and dome btw

Thanks Rod,
Not really a genius, I still work to scratch a living, no early retirement for me. I just persevere at the toil. This loco was started in 2017 !
You take care.

Thanks Rik, I am a bit anxious of the imminent steaming. Maybe even scared of it. I was supposed to a simple 'Eric' and it morphed into this complicated contraption. I am making the steam raising gizmo at this time, not the fan type but like one that was in a SMT mag. Window frames maybe today, next weekend I am on the full size locos at the Rattler, so some time in April it will steam.

Dazza, I don't do live steam but really appreciate the effort and incredible skill you put into your locomotive build. Everything is finished to the highest possible standard. A true work of engineering artistry!
