Michael has kindly sent me a kit of his '7/8ths Simple Skip' range. You get 3 x skips with the kit which is great value for money!

http://www.bustedbricks.com/78ths-simpl ... 3-73-p.asp

He also sent the 'Skip bucket jig' which I had time to build today:

http://www.bustedbricks.com/skip-bucket-jig-76-p.asp

Here is what you start with:

And then you end up very quickly with a nice jig:

You can see in this picture how it works, the end pieces go into the jig for you to add your own wrapper:

Hopefully I can start on the actual skip tomorrow!

Hi Tom if you catalogue assembly , I'll start a 7/8ths skip variations suite/ thread.....very Elgar...

I will do rusting recipe as a separate thread when I can bag a cheap lgb tipper.

Good idea. I am building these by the book as it makes a nice change from scratch building which takes me forever!

Managed to make a bit more progress today.

All parts cut out and ready. Hardly any prep work required as all the items are attached to one single fret board:

Gluing the chassis together. Make sure you glue it the right way around as the journals only fit one way (guess how I know this). The instructions are clear, my fault entirely:

Uprights glued together and then glued to the chassis:

Journals glued to the chassis and a dry run of the wheels and bushes fitted. It all runs very smoothly as the kit fits nice and square.

The bucket brackets glued to the bucket sides and test fitted to show that you can make this a working model if desired which I intend to do:

It's quite nice building more than one of something at the same time, almost production line like:

Need to sort out the skip wrappers now.

You need to screw down some test track on that old table top too !

I like that Michael.

I have found some great photos of tippers online so will be painting these up similar.

I attempted to use card for one of the skip wrappers but it didn't work out very well, too fiddly and then once all glued the skip was too small to sit in the wagon properly so ended up removing it all which was annoying!

Going to check out my local Hobbycraft to see if they apply very thin Plastikard or an alternative.

Dining room table or not. There are many things that can be improved by the addition of a length of track.

Did you cut the card to the size recommended? I've made a couple with card from cereal boxes now without problems.

When I measure the wagons I have made the uprights are not 99mm apart so that was why the skip did not fit properly. Trying to cut and glue 2 x pieces of the same size card was also fiddly for me.

I might have another go with the card but also just thought if I could create planked skip buckets. Did these ever exist?

I ain't got no 45mm track Jimbo as if I did 7/8ths again I would want to use that gauge.

I started with this (saved it from Milo just in time!)

And then ended up with my take on a planked skip:

I will add bolt detail and strapping but I think it works.

I squared the bottom of the skip sides off so to add a plank easier.

I don't know about plank built skips, but I have seen some that were riveted from flat iron sheets. More mine dram perhaps, but it might be an idea.

I could do that with the next one Jim using Plastikard, good idea.
