So Rik, when do you start on the canalised section of the river with a working staircase of locks?

Seriously, that is seriously good! :thumbleft:

Thanks Andrew.
Funnily enough, that is something I've always fancied doing, since I was a teenager. However, it would be a logistical nightmare.

The sluice gate is now in situ and does a rather fine job of controlling the water flow to the wheel ....

Hi Rik brilliant modelling of the sluice gate and water mill. The sluice gate works a treat letting the right amount of water through to control the watermill. :thumbleft:

Love the controlled rotation, and the flow rate of the stream/race. You’re making me replan the RLR version 2 (currently suspended).

Another top job Rik. I found by putting a large flywheel (a cast gear about 7"diam.) on the wheel shaft inside the mill allowed the wheel to run very steadily. Looking forward to seeing your mill weathered and settled in.

Might give that a try once I've got everything bedded in more permanently. Sounds intriguing. Of course, I could always try incorporating a momentum car's innards inside the mill, assuming the wheel could overcome the initial resistance.

There can be no end to this you know Rik. I was intrigued by the old wooden gear wheels used in the old mills, and in my minds eye I could see that it wouldn't be hard to make. But how far do you go. Ended up with a small wooden box with holes in it to let the sound out, and with about 8 small wooden blocks rattling round inside and attached to the shaft along with the flywheel. Makes a nice hollow clunky sound, added to the gurgling water.
Grant.

Just read your blog on the Mill Rik while I am recovering from some health issues and again I found it really worthwhile reading, not that I would be building a Mill, might at some point try to do a little stream, but the way you explain how you do things does some how get me inspired to try new ideas myself....Thanks Rik :thumbright: :thumbright: :thumbright:

Somebody else who has just read your blog, a brilliant piece of modelling there. Foamboard is very versatile and your painting takes it to another level. Thanks for that, inspiring as ever.

Thanks chaps. Glad you've found my scribblings interesting. I get a fair bit of pleasure out of sharing my experiences but its great to get feedback.

A couple of weeks ago, I went to a 'table top' sale the Civic Hall in the nearby town of Nantwich. A model railway society based in mid Staffs had a stall and were selling off some of their spare stock. I was chatting with one of the blokes who asked me what scale I model. When I said 16 mill, he asked where I was based. As soon as I mentioned I was between Nantwich and Chester he said, " You must be Rik. The Peckforton Light Railway. "

Now that really took me by surprise. But then, I suppose, the 16mm world is quite a small pool.

I think that, in the parlance of our times Rik, this means you've gone viral! - well done! ;)
