What a terrific setting for a railway, Dave. Plenty of scope and lots of ingenuity in that track plan too. You and your son are very lucky, more pictures when you are ready please.
Grant.

Great layout of track there with plenty of run distance as well as steam up areas and shunting - all looks like its on the level?

Hi Dave,

Grant is right, that's a very interesting location for a railway - not without it's challenges I'm sure - but full of potential. You have some very usefull levels to make operation easy on the back! I'm really looking froward to seeing more of your line as it develops.

There's something about gritstone that makes it a very 'natural' setting for a railway. Maybe it's just me, resulting from some very early memories of the Midland route between Ambergate and Rowsley.

Keep the pics coming!

Andrew

I agree with Andrew, the railway blends in naturally.

It looks like you have a fair bit of track down to run more than one train at a time!

Thanks for replies everyone. It is very useful having part of the track at chest height. We are very lucky with the space. I like to think that the challenges may be something like the real thing ( in my dreams ) and as you say Grant there is much scope. It isn't on the level, there is a gradient at to get under the footbridge from both directions. When we started the track resembled more of a roller coaster ride than a railway but we have gradually changed things to smooth out the gradients and bends and the loading gauge especially under the footbridge. We have far less derailments now. Oh the building with arches is a model of Chesterton Windmill, which is located in Warwickshire. Bought the model before we got into garden railway, it has since lost it's sails but we placed it there and it seems to fit in.

Thanks

Dave

Is it the bigger model or the smaller one?

Thanks

Hi Chris ours is about 20 inches high, not sure is that is the big or little one as it must be over 15 years since we bought it.
cheers

Ah yes, the 24 inch one is the bigger one. Is it "roughly" scale or miles out?

Hi Chris,

I have just looked at the Chesterton windmill site and the real thing is 36ft high so that puts the 24 inch model at 1 in 18.

Cheers

Dave

Gee Dave, many thanks for causing me to look up the details on Chesterton Mill. What an unusual structure for a wind mill. We have many windmills, but they don't look like that!!!
Grant.

Hi Grant it is unusual isn't it. You can't beat an Arch, very pleasing on the eye. I have always marveled at the Roman Colosseum with all it's arches, what an architectural masterpiece that was for it's time and mostly still standing today!

cheers

Dave

I agree, just finished restoring another antique clock, and for identification purposes had to do a crash course in gothic arch history. I now know the one below is a "Flamboyant Gothic Arch, I believe.

Great layout Dave, love the way it passes under the footbridge, and the little bench on the tunnel. brilliant...
