Apologies to anyone on here who is actually selling this.

Does this need restoration or just putting out of its misery?

That could do with a restoration! It looks like it's a relatively early Mamod bash. I probably have something wrong with me as I quite like it I don't think it looks like £200 pounds worth though! Maybe £120 or thereabouts.

My thoughts exactly. I think you are being over optimistic at £120 though.

I agree - there is something about that is tempting..........it looks a wreck but looks to have loads of character ( and no doubt wheezy cylinders!) - now if it were under £100 my finger would be itching on the bid button

At £200, must have a gold firebox or something!

That belonged to a deceased member... it was part of a collection I assisted in rehoming for the widow.
It has character and was one of two steam locos that the gent owned... I would hope that members on this forum would not be so judgemental of others work.
The railway this ran on was truly a piece of art and even though I never knew the chap, I could tell he really loved his garden railway.

I'm tempted to come out of retirement. But I'm not really a tram loco person, but at same time I think a good loco can be wielded from it.

No offence meant - I actually think we were all saying we like the loco, just looks like it needs some TLC - and a price reduction - if they get £200 , well done to them!

No criticism of the work at all, it was amazing what people did with Mamods. I am all for bashing and modification, indeed it sadly seems to be a dying art in some sectors of the hobby.

New efficient motion, a clean of the gas system and a repaint could see this look very smart.

You can see how it unfolded - it can be addicted. I'm as we speak tweaking my 'Lady of the Lake' Janet in perfecting it.

Looks more like a candidate for a sympathetic restoration than anything else. Unfortunately, with my usual 3% and 4% grade Mamods are out of the question. Two hundred quid might be a bit optimistic, though.

Thanks! I don't know whether or not she would be considered to be heritage but shes not a young engine ('80s-'90s?) and thus deserves restitution. I cant help wondering what happened to the sister loco...we may never know

I never saw it, laurence703 referred to it in his post above, as he seems to be the only one with any knowledge of the history of these locos, I wonder if he might oblige?  ;)
Nearly all the upgrade parts seem to be mike chaney items,  the other loco might follow similar lines (?) I'm 99% sure this is a modified slk (there are no rivets at all in her construction)

No rivets usually means an SL-K but also the rivets could have been removed by previous owner for ease of maintenance.

The paint under the red on the cab is black, but I have yet to see on the tanks

I suspect it is indeed an SLK basis then. These were much more popular as they were easier to disassemble, being all 6BA nut and bolt construction as opposed to SL-x locos which were more or less riveted.


If I may add an entry to "cruel and unusual things to do to a Mamod loco...."

This particular loco had its body cut up - the back was replaced with a Mamod Brake Van back, its side tanks were shortened and then the fronts cut off, being reinserted into the shortened side tanks and finally a second set of tanks gave up their cab floor sections to allow for the tanks-floors to reach to the back of the loco.


It then came into my hands in 2011, and in my inexperience and not being fully well, I firstly named it "Deep Thought" [yes, HHGTTG] and it in the name of paint economy, was repainted into this rather sprightly bright red livery. The lining was Trimline tape.

It met its sticky end in February 2012 however when it leaked meth spirit in transit and ruined the varnish and trimline. It was dismantled, the parts paintstripped, the Trimline scraped off and the somewhat absurd name taken away...

Such was my foolishness in my very early days in the hobby.
