CMES a new garden railway

Post by Tony Bird » Sat Sep 10, 2016 2:20 pm

Hi,

Last year a pedestrian, wheel chair and push chair walkway was constructed in the Cardiff Model Engineering Societies grounds in Heath Park. This construction helps the movement of the societies visitors on open days; it also gave the garden railway group a little extra land to play on.

The new walkway going past the steaming bays crossing over the 3.5", 5" & 7.25" tracks where it eventually finishes at the front of the existing garden railway.

The new track unlike the old is raised about two feet off the ground which will be a great help to some member like myself who are no longer as agile as they once were.

As can be seen from the photographs the track supports used are the same galvanised steel tubes and fitting that were used in constructing the guard rails used on the walkway. The bottom of these supports are bolted to 12" (300 mm) square paving slabs that rest on the ground. Where the entrances through the track will be the paving slabs rest on larger paving slabs which are cemented in place. In other places where the ground is soft the larger paving slabs are also used. Except for these entrances and soft areas the rest of the smaller slabs will just be levelled on sand.

The track bed will be treated wooded lathes resting on treated wooden longitudinal beams

Due to joint problems I cannot contribute a great deal to the construction but the lads that are working on it are doing really well! I will report further progress.

Regards Tony.

Last night we began setting the curves by aligning and fixing the longitudinal beams to the laths which, barring four gaps for lifting bridges, now run all the way around the new course. Setting the curves will determine how curved the track will be running across the bridges, so we can begin to construct those.

We quickly discovered that we'd been working hard to construct a table for the tea tray!

Our rather rough and ready angular construction is starting to look quite designed!
