They wouldn't look too unprototypical, would close the gap a bit and wouldn't foul the gangways when uncoupling like the chopper hooks might. ;)
Worth looking into, thanks. Would need to be either pivoted outboard of the buffer beams, or mounted on the bogies.

Is this the use of Proprietary couplings or sommat?

I was going to suggest perhaps a pin & link system expect the pins are fed through the sides for easier access. The pins themselves could be bent so they don't fall out whilst the unit's in motion

Planning to stick with the Accucraft choppers for now. Things have been rather too busy to make much progress lately, next step is to fill and paint the body shells.

The railcar (all 3 cars) managed a couple of laps of Dave Watkins' line on Saturday. Sorry, forgot to take any photos but it still looks as before!

Subsequent adjustment of the motor bogie pivot should help things along a bit, we had one or two issues negotiating Dave's double slip which I think were due to lack of fore-and-aft rocking on the motor bogie. Plus extra weight needed in the 2 trailer cars, and over the front bogie of the motor car.

Time for a bit of an update on the railcar. As Victor Isle found, it is still rather incomplete, but works...

After the trip to Dave Watkins' open day, the motor car has had plenty of extra weight added and now weighs in at just under 3lb.

The motor bogie was never quite happy (worm wheel poorly drilled out to suit the axle), and was also rather low geared. So a replacement worm wheel giving 18:1 rather than 30:1 gearing was substituted, with a great reduction in noise and a substantial increase in speed.

Experimental weighting of the trailer cars suggested that really we could do with a second motor bogie... fortunately the driving trailer was built with this possibility in mind (a removable floor section in the guard's compartment) so I just need to measure up and copy the existing bogie.

This of course necessitates power from the speed controller to the 2nd motor, so an extra 2 wires the length of the train. So today I have ordered another couple of servo extension leads, and hacked the necessary holes in the carriage ends. Best to get this done before painting commences, even though connecting up the 2nd motor bogie can wait.

Still need to experiment some more about gangway connections. Thinking of something more basic, perhaps in the style of the FfR and WHR ones.

A half term trip to Wales provided the motivation to look the railcar out; on Monday it did around 10 circuits of Llechfan's upper circuit (in 2-car mode) and acquitted itself rather well (better than chez Watkins). 3-car operation awaits completion of the second power bogie.

A few photos and then a short video...

The 2nd power bogie came together yesterday - working better than the original, which may come in for a little fettling...

And hastily assembled for a quick test run this afternoon with the 2nd power bogie and 3rd car. (Is anyone still interested in this thread - nobody else has posted here since May.)

That really looks "something like". It wouldn't look out of place in Mayrhofen.

Me too. I'm interested. In fact i've been awaiting further developments.

While I was building my Atlantic buffet car I looked at the Obs car on Ivan's site and thought it would make a great DMU though I felt it would benefit from an inner windscreen frame on the cab to beef it up a bit, making the front windows a tad smaller, hence making it look a bit stronger and crash proof for the driver.

You've done a great job motorising it and it clearly runs a treat.

So what's the plan for livery. Good ol' red/cream or something exotic.

Thanks folks - good to know someone is still reading here!

Red and cream is most likely - which would match the existing EHLR passenger stock. Actually this needs to happen soon, as final electrical fitting out can't really start until the paintwork is done. But ideas for how to paint the noses would be most welcome - continue the colours straight across, or something more interesting like Donegal railcars 19 and 20?

Not yet! But the power bogies did get dismantled for painting and, moreover, still work afterwards! I need to do a bit of filling and sanding on the bodyshells and get those painted, which in turn is waiting for some better weather and for me to locate a suitably large cardboard box for a spray booth.

Here's one of the completed power bogies, together with an unpowered one for comparison. Yes, the powered one is chunkier.

Hi,

I'll try to get the bogies measured up in due course, yes - once the Maundy Thursday sermon is out of the way. The idea has been to keep the dimensions, and some of the parts, of the IP bogies - though in practice this just means the wheelsets, bearings and (now dummy) side frames and axleboxes.

The spruce strip was needed to reinforce the sides where they had been cut and shut to move the doors around - I think this bit is around page 4 of the thread. The lower one I put at the right height to provide a convenient location for the floor as well, which helped when putting it all together.
