Allready done I beleive on a super detail WLLR earl, coal fired with working sanders. Not sure where to get scale sand though...

It's simple:

Find a 16mm quarry, with 16mm machinery, which quarrys out 16mm scale sand, then build a 16mm scale railway with 16mm scale trains to take the 16mm scale sand to the 16mm scale sanders on your 16mm loco!

Oddly enough I was thinking about smoke generators just the other day. To be used in a brake end passenger vehicle & deploy via a pipe at the rear to mimic steam heat escaping. Put on back burner for now..

If you want to put in a smoke generator why not just butcher a Hornby 28XX for the Smoke generator which runs off the power from the track... more power, more smoke and do it that way?

The Hornby smoke generators mentioned aren't very good, as the casing is plastic and they have been known to melt the plastic loco body.

Do a Google search for Seuthe (a much better unit) and you'll find UK suppliers and drawings for sizes. They are easy to find in model railway shops catering to the small scales.

Smoke units work by vaporising light oil, so they will oil up the area around them and they get hot enough to melt plastic, so that also needs to be considered. They also use as much current as a small motor and run on 12-15V, so a battery power supply might be problematic.

On the plus side, the standard HO/OO ones would be about the right size for a normal stove chimney in SM32.
