Good to hear you are making plans, Andrew.
Best of luck with your change to concrete blocks. I've been using them for nearly twenty years now. No matter how well they are laid, in my experience, there will always be some subsidence or heave over the years but it's relatively easy to compensate for this. In the worst cases, the offending blocks can be relaid, but in less severe situations the screws holding the track can be eased and pieces of slate or roofing felt can be slipped in beneath the track and ballasted over. So, using longer screws than seems necessary is a useful piece of forward planning ( or shorter screws can later be replaced with longer ones as required).

I was going to suggest roofing felt as opposed to geotextile, but I see that Peter has already explained the rationale. I wouldn't personally be so quick to give up on Filcris either. Despite the verdant plant growth, it looks like it's still securely in place. But it is your railway, so your rules. Whatever you choose to do, enjoy it and welcome back onto the (hobby) horse.

I've a bit more planning to do before I break ground but I take the hint that I need to do at least something!

The garden itself is demanding some attention (if only to try and rid myself of dratted Catmint!).

It may only be track lifting for a start but - Watch this space!
