16mm 00 gauge?

I have an idea in my head for a narrow narrow (!) gauge line running around the coal mine on my 16mm railway. I wonder if this is scale has ever been used already i.e 16mm on 00 gauge track. It would produce some very small locomotives.

Is there any realistic track gauge that scales down nicely to this? Has anyone ever done a similar thing?

I have ideas of very small steam locomotives on Hornby 0-4-0 chassis...

You need to visit http://tome.gn15.info/ to start with as there are other like-minded people out there: however I think they mainly build indoor layouts rather than garden railways. Most of us went into 16mm because 00 2-rail in the garden is Bad News!

Thanks for that! I should have made myself clearer - this is going to be on the indoor section of the line, which will effectively be built like a traditional indoor model railway, just in 16mm scale!

I'm trying to bodge

er engineer a HGLW body onto a Tri-ang Dock Shunter bogie......... its on my site below(workshop section). Going to radio control it with lights, sound an everyfink :D

That looks smart. You seem to have the same plan as I have! Where did you get the tippers from?

32mm Binnies Jim with the gauge narrowed to 16mmish: reasonably stable but I think they will need some Lead anyway. The track is Tri-ang series 3 from the Bay of E. (cheap as chips too

) If it interests you then I can stick a few pics on here of my construction as I go along, so as you'll know what not to do

I'll have to look into the Binnie wagons. I have plenty of Hornby track laying around - I think with the removal of several sleepers it could look quite good.

Yes, I would be interested in some pictures of the construction as you do it please. I'm sure others on here would be too!

I won't be able to make a start on this section until the summer as I am away from home. I may have a fiddle with track arrangement next weekend when I visit home. Would certainly add extra operating interest in little space...

notes:
The dock shunter is too highly geared really but I loaded it to 3 Binnies and it was OK. The sharpness of the curves didn't help.

Some of the batteries will have to be moved under the solebar as it is top heavy and there isn't the room for them all under the bonnet.

Both sets of batteries I used were nearly discharged so tonight one set is on for a full charge for further analysis. (To see if I can use less cells.)

Nice progress! Seems to run well. I'm surprised that it was too highly geared for more than 3 skips, you'd think the toy chassis would have been designed to pull more than that.

I can get away with using track power as with a standard 00 gauge loco, so can avoid shoehorning batteries in.

I look forward to further progress!

Am I right in thinking Gn15 would be a little under scale for 16mm scale? That will just mean I have even smaller locos, which will look even more quaint!

Not underscale, just a smaller prototype. 00 gauge works out to 12" gauge in 16mm scale, which is one of the ride in scales, just not as big as 15" gauge.

Gn15 seems to be used mainly to model estate railways in the spirit of the Duffield Bank and Eaton Hall railways.

A 'SM16' railway on an SM32 layout would be simulating something like a train ride attraction in a park, or a tourist area, or even the garden railway of someone with a very big garden.........

Do you know of any non attraction-esque railways running with this gauge track? I'm not necessarily looking for a prototype to allow me to do it, just interested!

I need to start looking at tiny locomotives and how to model in plasticard!

That's really a tourist attraction too, or a rich gentleman's plaything, certainly not the fully working affair the old Eaton Railway was

Not in the UK, but a friend is building an example of this sort of garden railway on his property. It's a private line, not open to the public.

Gauge is 12" and the scale is 6in/ft using 2' gauge prototypes. In SM32, the trains would work out about the same size as O16.5 scale stock. Peco do suitable loco and rolling stock kits in their O16.5 range.
