Painting Wood

Hi all,
Just recieved some Swift Sixteen crates.
After surfing the internet (and through A LOT of Warhammer forums!) I am struggling to find a way to paint it in a convincing, weathered wood effect.
Suggestions?

What sort of wood are you wanting it to look like? By weathered how has it weathered?

Well they would be soft-wood (such as Pine), and the weathering would simply be as if they've been left outside in the rain for awhile (less is more).

Start with your base colour. You then need to dry brush in the direction of the grain. I would then use sponging and washes to add the weathering - I'm ex Gw staff so I know nothing though

If you're working with ply, go out and buy yourself a bottle of Indian Ink. put a small brush full in a LOT of water, and experiment until you get the right colour - less is once more more........................ You can put further coats on to increase the effect.

As the crates are made of resin but you want them to look like wood I would suggest Tamiya Acrylic wooden deck colour. It dries to a matt finish looks like wood and takes weathering powders very well, once dry. I've used it on a few kits where wood is represented in resin castings. Just be aware though that it dries quickly and might catch you out if you overbrush it.
