For those folk wanting a realistic looking railway with scale ballast then get down to Aldi. They have fine grey granite chippings at £2.00 a bag.

They were down to 99p each in Aldi in Acocks Green last week.

Thanks for the tip-off - unfortunately by the time I got to our nearest Aldi (Southville, Bristol) it was too late... back to Plan A, sweeping and sieving chippings from nearby streets. When the neighbours aren't looking...
