Sea Lion

Post by MuzTrem » Mon Dec 17, 2012 11:06 pm

Today some photos appeared in my Facebook feed showing the newly-overhauled Sea Lion working Santa Specials on the Groudle Glen Railway. Of course, it's wonderful to see this delightful little engine back in steam, but what really caught my eye were the green bufferbeams!

Apparently these are authentic but, since they are so unusal, I wondered what others thought of them? I wasn't sure at first but I think they are growing on me - they make the engine look quite sophisticated somehow!

It's interesting, though, that Trackshack's website says the bufferbeams on the forthcoming Accucraft model will be "probably" be red...

It is interesting how liveries get changed, with the Flying Scotsman still causing controversy.

You wonder why it was not painted this way when it was first restored in 1987 but interesting to see how it has changed since then twice.

I suppose the next change will be highlighted smoke box door hinges and a return to the original style of smoke box door dart as seen in old photographs.

And to answer your question I do like it with the green and lined buffer beam. Wonder why Accucraft have decided to go with the red buffer beam?

Chris Cairns.

I think it looks rather smart. I'm waiting for Polar Bear to appear in her 60's livery though...

We did wonder about doing it towards the end of her last ten year ticket, but maybe at the end of its next ten year stint ;)

Speaking of PB, she should be back in steam for Amberley Museum's 2013 season.

She'll also, all being well, be appearing as a static exhibit at Brighton Modelworld 22-24 February 2013.

I'd imagine that the determinative factor is getting a reasonable rate from the Steam Pirate for one steam loco on low loader.... Of course, I am so ancient that I remember when Steam Packet was all steam apart from the freighter Peveril!
