I just can't choose!

Post by Sylvian Tennant » Tue Sep 04, 2012 7:39 pm

Okaydoke, well as you may or may not be aware I have been looking into going BIG for a long time (about 12 years) and soon if everything goes okay will give me the chance to actually buy a real live steam locomotive.

There has been alot of Umming and arring especially as it's quite a big decision when this is your first buy on this scale. So I've deicde to go against The Accucraft Mortimer (the cheaper option) and potentially opt for a Katie.

But now I have a further dilemma, I like ALL the colours but have decided to look into three of my preffered options.

Image

This one I like as it is simple and sort of reminds me of Percy from The Rainway series. I was a bit worried about the green and red but it comes out quite nicely

Image

Thsi is personally a fav but my girlfriend (who has had to put with with this for a while now) think it would clash with her rather bright ginger hair

Image

This I think is nice and simple however if I go black I may go down the BR mixed traffic or LNWR look. Also I'm one of those Gothie types!

Anyway... help!

Ask your girlfriend to dye her hair green and get the orange/ umber one

I would suggest that before you think about your loco liveries, you should decide what carriage livery you like, and then choose loco colours that go well with it...unless you're planning a freight-only line, of course! ;)

Clash with her hair.... very good... thats a new one. If it clashes find a different girlfriend or buy her a home colouring kit from boots and go with the colour you desire.... Remember girlfriends are replacable but an engine will remain in your heart for ever !

Personally I like the green. Ha, we're not very helpful, are we?

Black would go well with just about any coach livery, though.

So far, the Orange/Umber is a winner, with the Green being a good contender.

Vapouriser: Good idea but she is dead set against getting her hair dyed... though I could do it in her sleep.... hmmm

MuzTrem: Ah god no! The would general go with anything, though it's a toss up between LNWR plum/grey, green/cream or blood/custard. Though I do like blue/white too.

sstjc: Yeah! luckily she ain't on here so I can say that, I do love her though and she does cook for me. She also puts up with this train thing I have which others haven't done so, I might do a best of both worlds... if I can, if not then I'll always have Katie :P

The down side to this all is that I walked into the work this morning to be told that our site is closing down in the next years... bad time but that is NOT gonig to stop me! I saved up a bl**dy long time to get this far.

Anyway, Yeah...so please do keep suggesting away!

The coaches depend on the loco! Oddly enough.

if I go green then I was thinking of blood/custard or dark green/cream

If I go umber dark green/cream or plum/grey

If I go black... free for all!

Got to say another vote for green, I find the Roundhouse Tan colour/umber absolutely vile and is possibly my most hated prototype loco livery.... However, it is your engine so therefore the final choice should rest with you.
With regards to the loco/stock colour co-ordination, I do know that red locos look particularly good at the head of my green and white coaches, and it seems to work the other way round, green loco on red and white coaches
"What the hell is that?"
"It's a model icebreaker sir."
"It's a bit big isn't it?"
"It's a full scale model sir....."

Buy it in kit form and then you can paint it what you like (and it won't be all gloss then) :)

Of the Roundhouse standard colours I would go for green. As a loco livery it works with green and cream - provided you use the same green, red and cream, and medium and dark greens work with plum and off-white. The Isle of Man Railway ran mid-green locos and plum and off-white carriages in the 1930s, and again in the mid-1990s and it worked quite well.

The tan/orange livery always looks like canine 'sick poopies' to me - sorry, I know, TMI.

I do like the umber / tan in your picture but isn't that a bit deeper/richer than the R/H tan ?
