A very interesting and nice sound Andy. Do you use a small circular hole or a slot to achieve your chuff? I'm currently using a piece of copper pipe which is soldered up on the top, and a small circular hole drilled on the side lower down, to put on top of my Mamod & IP Jane exhaust pipes as an exhaust restrictor, and was wondering if a small horizontal slot would make a difference to the chuff achieved.

making chuff pipes,
On roundhouse loco,s take a bit of brass about 1/2 inch long drill two holes in the bottom of it to take the two 1/8th exhuast pipes,in the other end of the brass drill a bigger hole until you see the two holes,i then turn some brass to fit in the larger hole i drilled,i then drill a small hole through that straight down the centre, the exhuast then shoots through the small hole making a blast, this is then directed to hit the chimney base giving a chuff,it's a blast nozzel,as full size.
On accucraft loco,s
you have a single exhuast pipe, you can shorten it into the smokebox then cut a thread on it take a piece of brass ,drill and tap this to the same as the exhuast don't drill all the way through the brass, because you need to drill a small hole from the top, this then gives you a blast pipe, which give you a chuff.
