New Loco Project - Collins Pixie

Post by Jonnyb » Thu Jun 17, 2010 2:40 pm

After being out bidded for a scratch built hunslet engine on the bay I saw this engine in bits and I have been looking for a project, so following my sucessful bidding I am now the owner of a loco or most of one in bits:

Image

On first inspection most of it is there apart from a bit of platework, I have sussed out how it goes together but needs new screws, some pipe work and a good clean and paint.

This will intend to put it back together, get it running and then worry about its appearances.

One problem that seems to be apparant is that the steam chest has been removed and repositioned 90 degrees with the chaisis being extended. This has resulted in the steam feed to the steam chest being to short and the regulator/reverser (osilating cylinders) fouling the smokebox.

I will put up some pics of it semi assembled to show what it should look like (giant inside framed mamod).

To be honest I think its a scratch built job, possibly inspired by a mike chaney hero class. The only mamod bit on there is the smokebox.

This is what it should look like, apologies for the poor quality but the iphone camera is shocking

Note the regulator/reverser coming up throught the cab floor.

In the last picture you shoudlbe able to make out the steam chest which definatly looks like it has been rotated 90 degrees. I not sure how easy thats going to be to rectify.

Ahh, now with the better pics it does seem to be 'home brewed' Although there is definatly some chaney influences

I have been informed that this not a home built engine, but a Collins Pixie (the first name escapes me) from the early eighties!!

If anyone has any information that they could pass on to me I would be most grateful.

It is now being worked on. The boiler has been striped ready for a repaint and will be pressure tested next week. I am also hopeing to get the chaisis run on air to make sure it is working smoothly.

Pics will follow when it looks like ive done something.[/b]

Contact Derek Wiggins via the heritage pages of 16mm association
as he can either put you in touch with someone who is in the know or put a request out for information to help you

...its a historic loco as far as 16mm/garden railways goes.
Derek and the Heritage team put displays on are various show during the year, and would love it if you could display it on thier stand

Cant believe how long Ive had this now and its still not finished.

Small update (pics to follow later)

The main body has been stripped and painted, not the best job but it is extnerally fired so ill see how we get on.

I now have some pipe to correct the reversing valve.

Boiler and smokebox is stripped ready to be primered tonight.
Chasis is also to be painted this week.

Just need to get some small screws to hold the whole thing together.

WOw!! You have certainly turned that around. What looked like a bit of a basket case is now looking very smart indeed. Plus the rarity/heritage angle makes it a top loco in my mind. Colour looks great as well. I must admit when I first saw it as you bought it I thought it was just another modified mamod, now it looks proper old school steamer. Nice work.
Tommy Dodd may have an ARS key but I have a TASS button & a Rope Ladder, just like pirates, except the TASS button bit.

Thanks chaps, im looking forward to trying out the finished article.

Its LMS crimson lake, thought i would try and keep it fairly original and it seemed like a good choice.
